I think that's a very important statement to highlight, and one that no doubt is the most important. You can't put a price on happiness (Santa where's my Ferrrari!).

I prefer PC over tons of reasons one is customization. Nothing says it like getting what parts you want and having new hardware come in the mail and the look and smell of the new hardware all put together wink.gif

Also, why use only a single 8GB stick just do 2x4GB lol

This article doesn't really cover it at an essential level. I don't think it's entirely fair, on either platform. They lump on a pricey HDTV, and extra accessories, to rack up the cost for the console and the PC they built is laughably expensive for the crap they put in it.

I can build a reasonable PC with modern components that will play most games rather adequately for £400 (I know because I have, it's sitting in a box waiting to be sold on Ebay right now). Throw in an extra £20 for a mouse and keyboard (you can buy standard ones for £10 each at Maplins).

That is all you need for either. They're the essentials.

No point in counting displays and speakers as essentials as you could use any around the home on both formats.

PC gaming costs twice as much on a hardware level, assuming one wants some up to date hardware. The real difference maker is in software.

Assuming every new game released on PC is £30 and every game released on console is £35 (I always buy console games at £35 from my favourite supermarket, you can also get console games pretty cheap online if you shop around). 1 game a month over three years.

Now let's add those totals up. So over three years...

This is a more accurate example I think.

That pretty much puts all platforms on par with each other with over a three year span.

The price for the consoles you listed, is that the price they were when they launch? To be more fair you have to list the launch prices and then figure out the cost of the console across it's life time. Someone who buys an Xbox or PS3 today probably won't keep it for another three years since the new consoles will be out by then.

Consoles are far more limited then a PC with a gaming GPU. Even if you pay a few bucks more a PC can do so much more then gaming!

I think you can build a PC for 400$ that will run any game at 1280x720 at lowest settings and no AA, just like the consoles. And you can save a lot on buying the games. plus you get PC! For browsing movies etc.

Comparing a 1000$ rig that can run games at 1080p at high details to a console with 720p( low details) output is stupid.

Well then in that case shall we go for the full retail price of the PC parts as of when they launched aswell then?

All prices were the cheapest prices that I can buy them for now. The PC is a fully working rig that I have built no longer than two weeks ago. The console prices are the cheapest I could find on Amazon.

You could go back a year or two but the prices weren't that much more for the main system hardware. You could add say £50? Would it really make that much difference? Let's also go back a year or two and get the prices for the same PC parts back then aswell.

The main consensus is that alot of people believe console gaming to be cheap, while PC gaming is extremely expensive. The point being made is that it is entierely not true whatsoever despite how cheap consoles are today.

So I don't see your point, other than to inflate console prices higher up to win a battle that has already been won.

i went through 4 xbox's in less then 1 1/2 years for various hardware problems, first 3 costs 150 while the 4th costed 200. about to put another 200 down on the new slim model xbox soo overall $650 then the games i spent about $140 thats $790 and then the subscription of 3 months at 20 bucks a payment thats 100 there and then add in the DLC's i got thats $80 and that equals $970 for 1 1/2 years of total cost for XBOX alone on me im getting more games tho which will put me over 1,000 total of total cost

PC: $200 vc, $49.99 case, $34 ram, 89.99 PS, $100 Monitor, 149.99 Mobo, $49.99 Water cooling kit = $522 then add in the games i play that is $701.97 total cost i play alot more games but i got them all free (nearly 50 PC games free at one time biggrin.gif not by illegal ways but craigslist)

reason why i added my games is cause what purpose is to purchasing a console if you aren't gonna play games, i've done it with PC cause thats also main purpose for my PC it's a Gaming PC nothing more nothing less.. biggrin.gifthumb.gif if it's off topic i do apologize

How about the 50 dollars per controller? The repair costs of the Xboxs.
The inability to do anything other than game and watch Hulu/Netflix.
Where as you can actually WORK from a PC, make your own games NOT get locked out when you mod it -.- use it as an actual media hub, hard drives and storage space WERE cheap as heck for pc.
THe parts on a pc in general last longer if you know how to shop...
IGN... why?... Just why?

People buy are buying new computers in leaps and bounds these days, I know of 8 families alone who just upgraded from their old systems... so add another 100$ to the family computer on your end and you can game on it, that's how I got into pc gaming, it was in fact a MUCH cheaper route when the consoles cost roughly 300$ I paid 80$ to game on a pc that cost 70 dollars.

You, and a few others, are missing the point.

You're thinking of it as a direct comparison, hardware for hardware, console vs PC. "ZOMG which is better?" "Herp derp!" "Arrrgh! Cooonnnnnssssoollllzzzzzeeezzzzzzzz!" biggrin.gif

The article is trying (badly) to highlight that while your short term investment is a little more expensive, the long term benefit is more substantial. And that over a period of time it is actually more cost effective to game on a PC than a console, even with a decent gaming rig.

It's focus is to dispel the myth PC gaming is substantially more expensive than console gaming. Not try and show which is or isn't better and which can do what.
