It was written for managing iPods, it is perfect. My driver here, is converting Windows users to Linux, and iTunes is the only thing in the way. Wine is a bust sadly, as Apple seem to go out of their way to break it with each update.
Anyway, if you feel left out with Windows & Mac having native iTunes clients, sign this - http://www.petitiononline.com/itmslin/petition.html
My ipod doesn't get "synced" very often due to this fact lol :). I purchase most of my itunes music/apps thru the device. I would like to see at least the ability to sync (or even the ability for you to read the "harddrive" for your where music/movies are stored in linux). It is probably for this reason alone, that i've gravitated towards Android based devices, even unrooted, I can access 90+% of android devices SD cards and at least on my phone, I can access the device's internal Storage space thru a file explorer.
I think a lot of it has to do with GPL, why Apple shy's away from it, considering they have a fairly "strong" presence in Open Source compared to at least that of MS. They release and use mostly BSD licenses when dealing with OSS, its the main distinction between the two license, where GPL is more draconian, BSD is more "permissive" with the rights of the developer/Source Code.
itunes isn't the world greatest program, but it does the one thing that others can not, sync apple products and access the itunes store, so it would be nice to at least have the option of itunes on a linux system :) (or that android tablet i've been eyeballing will become a reality before an Ipad :)).
Silver in wine typically means they got it to install and at least startup...but usually it is highly unstable, crashes or simply only starts up, but doesn't work after that. It will need to become at least "gold" status, before it becomes "usable". :)
