3x4GB or 6x2GB?

Thread Starter
Title says it. I have 3x2GB RAM currently (Rampage III Formula), and I want to double my memory to 12 GB. Should I just get another 3x2GB kit, or get a 3x4GB? The reason I ask is because I recall that with DDR2 memory on certain boards, having a lot of RAM modules installed made OC'ing less stable. Maybe it's not an issue these days, but I wanted to find out if having six sticks of RAM will have any drawbacks as opposed to three.

On some setups i have observed better performance with less physical sticks of ram(same amount of total ram). These are non-OCed setups though.

In your case though you already have 3x2gb so another same set would be the practical way.

Thanks, though I had thought that it would be more of an issue with an OC'd setup, specifically for northbridge temps and stability. I should add that my RAM isn't OC'd at all.

Any other opinions before I pull the trigger on another set of 3x2GB?

Yea i'd opt for the 3x4. less to deal with IMO.

but money is money and if you already have one set i dont see why getting another wouldnt be reasonable

I would have to agree, everything i have read, heard, and experienced is less is better. I original had all 6 slots filled on my board but now use a 3x4gb kit.

Did you have any issues with 6 sticks?

I suppose I'll try 6 sticks, since it is much cheaper.

Yes, was harder to get a stable OC. System ran much smoother after the change.
