Possible first time water cooling thoughts?

Thread Starter
I'm just receiving most of the parts for a new 3930k build in a xigmatek elysium case. I ordered the CPU with an h100, but I'm trying to price and decide whether I want to try a more custom water cooling setup. I've never actually done water cooling before so forgive me because I don't really know all of the specifics about what I would need and what is good.

I've been reading reviews, forum posts, and other information and putting together a small list of parts for what I would be interested in using. So far I've got

XSPC RX360 Radiator
XSPC Raystorm CPU block
XSPC Dual 5.25 Bay Reservoir ?
Koolance PMP-450S or Swiftech MCP655 (is there any difference between the 2?)
Primochill PrimoFlex 7/16 ID 5/8 OD tubing
Killcoil
1/4 to 1/2 barbs

Then I already have multiple cougar vortex fans to use on the rad.

I'm curious what anyone's thoughts on that setup might be and what could possibly be switched out for more reliable parts. Right now I have two MSI GTX 580 Lightning Xtremes that I don't think have any blocks available, but in the future I may want to switch to tahiti/kepler with water cooling.

I guess my main points of concern are the reservoir and extra parts. I read that some of the bay reservoirs can be tough and or more prone to leaks? I've had a bit of trouble finding reviews about specific reservoirs so I'd be very open to suggestions. Also, I'm not quite sure exactly of all the small parts that would be needed such as all the different barbs and extras. Also I notice that the reservoir I had originally listed has options to have a contained pump. Would that be better? I just want to make sure that if I do decide to order a setup that I don't get it delivered only to realize I need something else smile.gif

Those were actually what I had first considered. I was looking at the 750 RX360 kit originally. I just figured if I'm already on a spending spree with this build that I'd like to get whatever the better parts might be up front. I obviously don't have any experience with it myself to make that decision. I know that ordering the kit would be the easier solution in terms of parts, I just based some of the changes off of the reviews and posts I had read. I read a few reviews mentioning the pump as being the weakest link in the kit. Another saying that the tubes had a tendency to turn discolor. From there I just went about looking up all the parts I could. My only real goal is to try to keep it under $400.

Aside from the fact that the kit would be slightly easier up front for a first time build, is there any other benefit to the kits?

Your setup looks good.

The main thing to have in mind with the bayres's, is that it makes the loop harder to bleed - or at least, so I've heard.
The pumps you've listed, I think, are made the same place, just like the Laing D5 is.

You seem to have all your parts figured out, but some stuff to consider getting is:

Angled adapters like 45 or 90's to make the tubing-job easier.
Mounting screws for the fans on the rad.
Anti-vibration mounts for the pump and/or fans.
Anti-kink coils for the tubes, if needed.
Thermal paste cleaner, and some new thermal paste if you haven't got any.

Good luck mate. Just did my first WC setup, and I love it!

The 2 main advantages of the Rasa kits are the fact that they make things easier as they come with everything you need to get you loop up and running without needing to select all the parts, so just easier. The second thing is the price, if you were to put all the exact same parts the come in the kit together separately it would come out much more expensive than ordering the kit. Now for what I like about my Rasa kit which I just installed this past week, the fact that I was able to get the loop going at a decent price and I can slowly over the coming year upgrade the parts in the loop to my tastes from parts that I select. I just felt going with the kit in the end gave me more options and made things easier and lessened the punch to my wallet since I had just bought all new components for my build and that left me with little money for the cooling loop. Now I can save up here and there and get a new Rad and then a new Pump/Res and all I'll have to do is drain the loop and remove the old and put in the new and all my tubes are already run biggrin.gif

However if you go with the list you have above you put together a good list of parts and they will serve you well too. As for the pumps, I don't know if they are the same but I don't think so and if I were you I'd get the MCP655 widely accepted as the best pump out there! Or you could just grab this and the pump is already installed into the Res :

Thank's for the information. I'll be sure to add a few of the extras like the angled adapters.

I will throw that down onto the list of possibles! Thank you

Aside from convenience, is there any benefit to the dual bay reservoir with embedded pump compared to an external pump with a single or dual bay reservoir?

That's the main benefit, however I like the fact that they take up less space inside the case so you get a cleaner look and the fact that you can see your water level with a simple look at the front of your case.

Alright I think I'm getting close to ordering. This is what I have so far
700
Everything there look good or am I missing anything? I decided partly on the DD Monsoon res over the XSPC version just hoping it might have slightly less of a chance of leaking or cracking. Plus the black and red matches the asus ROG stuff a bit. I will actually probably be ordering http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835108082&Tpk=swiftech%20655 from newegg in place of the VP655 since I have a gift card there. I assume I just take the top off the swiftech to install?

The only things I'm concerned with are testing the system and how to drain it later. For testing I don't know whether I should be leak testing first completely outside of the case then trying to disassemble everything and probably cut new tubing before leak testing within the case? Otherwise if I leak test within the case should I try to remove my motherboard? I dont have a removable tray using a Xigmatek Elysium.

Lastly I would like to make it slightly easier to drain from the start and so I was wanting to setup a drain port or something in the middle of one of the lines. I found these three items
http://www.frozencpu.com/products/10382/ex-tub-622/Bitspower_G14_Matte_Black_T_Adapter_BP-MBTMB.html

http://www.frozencpu.com/products/10959/ex-tub-689/Bitspower_G14_D-Plug_Male_Male_Coupler_Set_-_Matte_Black_BP-MBWP-C07.html?tl=g30c101s743

http://www.frozencpu.com/products/6672/ex-tub-155/Bitspower_G14_Chrome_Stop_Plug_w_O-Ring_BP-WTP-C06.html?tl=g30c101s743

but I don't really know if all or some of them can be used in some combination to make a decent drain? I'm pretty sure I also need to buy 2 or 3 1/2'' fittings for the T as well?
