Could i get some help overclocking.

Thread Starter
Hi guys. ive read the guides and everything but im still having trouble getting my processor overclocked without it lagging up the computer.
ive used the AIOverclock feature on my board and also tried to manually overclock the cpu, but once it gets to the desktop screen, things go weird, music goes crackly and the mouse usually lags around the place. I've also tried extra cooling but it doesnt seem to make much difference.

Here are some screens of my system.

any help would be great, thanks.

Alright, first thing is first: Don't use the AI Oc'ing features, they're crap under most circumstances. You ALWAYS want to OC through the BIOS.

When entering the BIOS, familiarize yourself with all the current/default settings. Then begin to prepare for your OC by disabling "Spread Spectrum", if you don't have this, don't worry. If you have a setting called "Overclocking Profile" or something along those lines, take it off of [AUTO] and set it to [STANDARD]. After this, make sure to fix your PCI bus at 33.33mhz and your AGP/PCIE bus at either 66mhz for AGP, or 100-105 for PCIE. Then begin to process with your OC.

Raise the FSB clock by 2-3mhz and press F10 to save and exit. If your system posts, then raise it again. Once you raise your FSB ~10mhz, then let your PC boot into windows and check for stability and 100% MAX load temperatures using Prime95 (google it).

If you have any problems, I'll be here to help.

thanks for the fast reply.
so far so good. it started up fine. i've overclocked the fsb by 10MHz and its currently running at 2.57. i have run prime95 yet, but a i was downloading it the computer started to do the lag thing, where the mouse jumps around when i try to move it. its fine now, but it might start at any time. anyway ill run the test with prime 95.

I'm really curious as to why your mouse lags around occasionally.

You must have some kind of background process that starts up when you boot into XP :-\\ Open up the task manager and watch the CPU usage bar and see which process uses more CPU when that "lag" comes along... It'll be tedious, but that could help stop it

You should be able to take that Celeron to...3.0Ghz probably, more if it stays cool enough.

Also, if the mouse lag isn't a background process, it could be from your RAM (if it isn't all the same manufacturer and speed, that is)...

Anyhow, I'm off to bed. Keep my updated on how you do, I'll help if you run into problems, which you most likely will...Everyone does. Took me 3 months to figure out how to take my P4 beyond 3.6Ghz, I was stuck at a wall and couldn't figure out how to get past until I changed that "Performance Mode" setting off of [AUTO]...stupid failsafe lol

Alrighty. well i ran prime95 for 2 hours. got bored so i stopped it. anyway i thought yea maybe i have a dodgy stick of ram in there. so i took out one stick that was oem and left my 2 good sticks in there. i booted up, after about 1 min the comp froze. and also the CPU overclock changed from 2.7ghz to 2.8 when i removed 1 stick of ram. So then i removed the overclock and booted. still same problem. so removed another stick of ram and left my best in there. booted up fine, then i just put the other 2 sticks back in and it works now, but it isnt overclocked now. im thinking of trying to OC again but with only the 2 good sticks, but i want some more cooling first.
thanks again. any info one why this happened would be good.

What are the timings for each stick of RAM?
Some memory modules can't run at the timings that you specify...and definitely not 3 unless they are all the same.
Run CPU-Z...and post the timings for each module and we'll see if we can find a medium that all 3 will work at so you can get back to clockin'

Only run the two sticks that are in screenshots 1 and 3.

They both have the same timings for their clock, so they should be ok.

edit: gets to desktop and runs for about 30 seconds before freezing.
