Moving on From AMD Upgrade Help

Hey Everyone,

I am getting my year end bonus from work soon, so I decided to use part of it to go to the intel side, since I have been AMD my whole life...

I plan on using my existing case, HDDs, PSU, and GPU, so I would need a cpu, ram, and mobo pretty much, and might as well get a new cpu cooler as well

Can you guys let me know what you think of these parts? or recommend me something better? Id like to stay in the same price range as I have here (600USD or so)

Also, what is the difference between P67 and Z68 chipsets?

CPU - I5 2500k
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072

Mobo - ASUS P8P67 DELUXE (REV 3.0) LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131701

RAM - G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model F3-14900CL9D-8GBXL
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231455

Cooler - Corsair H80
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181016

Thanks everyone!!

I know with AMD, they like tight timigs over ram speed. With intel, is faster ram better? or is ddr31600 going to be negligible from a speed perspective from ddr31866?

Do intels care for ram timings?

DDR3-1600 is a bit faster than DDR3-1333, but beyond that you won't see much of an improvement with Sandy Bridge.

My recommendation is to stick with DDR3-1600. CAS 9 is fine. You should be able to find an 8GB (2x4GB) kit for $30-40.

From Anandtech's Sandy Bridge memory scaling article:

awesome, thanks everyone!! ill make the change to ddr3 1600 cas9

How about a cooler...for 2500k, if I was to overclock, what is a decent air cooler? I have an h50 now and was going to go for an h80, but i think I might try to save a few bucks and go with an air cooler? (i would be shooting for 4.5 - 4.8 clock speed)

Noctua NH-D14 or Thermalright Silver Arrow. Both will outperform an H80 while being quieter. See the Anandtech review if you want exact numbers.

Really depends on your CPU tbh how well it overclocks some need a crapload of voltage to reach say a 45 multi or higher (like mine but i can still get a decent overclock with my cooler) and some need very little.

But 99% of the time you will get to 45 with air cooling.
Some nice air coolers.
Noctua NH-D14
Silver Arrow
Venomous-X (ofcourse because i have one biggrin.gif)
Hyper 212+ (nice budget cooler)

And there are a few other.

What do you guys think of this board?

ASRock Z68 Extreme4 LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157250

I am looking for a sub 200 z68 1155 board with usb3.0 internal headers, thats my only real requirement...is this decent or do you recommend something else?

Going to be pairing it with a 2500k and a CM 212 evo cooler and 8gb DDR3 1600 CAS8 memory...
