Bye AMD , hello Intel!

Thread Starter
Owkay, let's start. Firstly, in january or february i'll be getting a new PC because the one i have is already eons old! (the budget will be around 900 bucks , or 3000ron in my country, only for the listed items) So... I'm planning on using an external HDD 3.5" 7200rpm as the main drive (i'm going to remove it from it's rack and use it internally, sata2). Also, i'll be using an Sirtec HP 650watts modular PSU (2x25A, 12 volts rails - 46Amps max. combined) - but i have a doubt about it : it's already 2 years old and i don't know if it will be fine with the system i have in mind?

Another question would be if i should wait for the Ivy Bridge and or SB-E quad core cpu's ? I could extend and get an I7 3820 and X79 UD3 board and keep my current graphics card for a couple of months (or a bit more) - OR i could get an I5 3550k and a Z77 board - but i don't know when this will be out. I could probably wait until the end of march, tops!

Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3-B3 - 163$
CPU - Intel Core i5 2500K 3.30GHz - 262$
RAM - Corsair 8GB DDR3 1600MHz CL9 Dual Channel Kit Vengeance LP Rev. A - 54$
CPU Cooler - Thermalright HR-02 Macho - 59$
Case - CM Storm Enforcer - 113$
GFX - Gigabyte GeForce GTX 560 Ti OC 1GB DDR5 256-bit - 290$

So, what do you think? This or wait for I7 3820 / I5 3550k ?

PS: I'm using my pc at browsing the net ( biggrin.gif ) , gaming ( 1080p resolution, mostly strategy and racing games and a bit of mmo's ) and of course some HD movies. thumb.gif

Get the SB now and then upgrade with Ivy when it comes out.And better yet if you run into some more money later on you can make another rig with the SB.thumb.gif

It would be much easier waiting Ivy if you would wait until possibly April. But if you don't intend to wait that long I would suggest you to buy things that aren't so expensive, but also has room for upgrading. The ASRock Extreme3 has PCI-e 3.0 compatibility, which would bode well when Ivy bridge comes out.

Also, the new AMD 7xxx series GPU's are also coming out in January, so you can also buy a graphics card not-so-expensive and get an AMD card when it comes out. Leaked benchmarks are making the new GPU's look extremely tempting. If the AMD 7xxx series sounds like a viable option, look for a gtx 550ti, they are very inexpensive, and will play sc2 on ultra with no problems. Would probably run even more on ultra depending on what games you are playing.

If you're not set on getting that particular CPU cooler, for that money(not sure in your case) an Antec Kuhhler 620 also costs similar to that thermalright cooler. It's a closed-loop liquid cooler that is very good for the price.

I'd get a ivy ready mobo grab a SB and switch to IB if you got the coin and it appeals to you.

buy what you can afford when you can afford to upgrade, if you wait for ivy, you'll start hearing about haswell/broadwell. IMO get sandy for now and look into ivy around the next fall. then wait for broadwell. but if your really concidering to upgrade to ivy save some $$ and get a non-k 2500 then get the top unlocked i7
