$250.00 @ NewEgg ... (The reports are all over the map about This Card's unlocking potential, so Buyer Beware ?)

Diamond 6950PE52G HD-6950 w-Dual Bios.jpg

This is the same card that I have, though mine has a black Dual Fan Shroud with Diamond Logos on it, instead of the Red one pictured here. It does have the red PCB...

It also DOES have the Dual BIOS Switch, and it IS unlockable and BIOS Flashable.

I've had no problems with it thus far!

As for the conflicting reports. I believe Diamond is producing several different models of the same card, under the same model number, and also with identical part numbers. I bought the Card from FRYS; and got a REFERENCE model; but it had some problems (was causing my system to lock up) and needed to be returned to the Store. They gave me an Even Exchange on a replacement, and let me go pick the replacement off the store shelf myself.

The replacement that I picked, had the EXACT same model number, same part number; and the retail box was also EXACTLY the SAME.

I got home, opened the box, and found it was a NON-Reference designed card in the box, with a non-reference black dual fan shroud with the Diamond Logo on it, with a very nice heat pipe cooling system mounted on it. It also still had the Dual Bios Switch on it...

I installed it into my system, and found that it ran nearly 35c COOLER and considerably quieter then the original Reference Model that I previously returned to the store! The original Reference model peaked at around 95c under load with its fan at full speed; while this one peaks at around 60c - 65c under load and fans barely at 50 - 60 percent speed.

Furthermore, it successfully took a Bios Flash on the Bios Switch.

Some people say they are getting this card though with a RED Shroud/Dual Fan system, as pictured... but with NO switch.

So I am suspecting that Diamond is producing different models but all with the same model number, and all with the exact same retail packaging. So its probably luck of the draw on this card.

I can state, that when I returned the original faulty card back to FRYS and went to pick the replacement off the shelf, there were another 4 boxes of the SAME card, on the Shelf... but they ALL had been opened and had stickers on them claiming that they had been returned (in working order). The one I picked was unopened; so I am guessing people buy these cards and then keep returning them until they got the Model Design that they want.

I've read that 6950's that come with a red PCB have different Memory modules that are not as good quality as the ones on the black PCB reference versions...

But.

I'm satisfied with mine as it is for now.

As I've stated before, I have seen that the differences between running it as a 6970 vs. as a 6950; are barely noticeable.

All I care about, is that it beats the heck out of my games!

Get the Sapphire Dirt 3

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102945

I had to RMA my first one, but my second one has worked wonderful! Both of mine unlocked with the bios switch. No flashing, no warranty issues, and no messing with programs.

I'm not exactly understanding how these cards apparently only have a 30% success rate when the guy said he had 8 of them and they all unlocked, 2 of mine unlocked, etc. Are you talking unlock success (to 1536 shaders), or flashing the bios?

Secondly, if these cards unlock the shaders, I thought that was the same as a flash. Why would you need to flash the card (and risk damage)? It also seems like a LOT of people are having an overwhelming success rate on Newegg.

I ranked the Sapphire DIRT3 Edition (Model #100312-3SR) somewhere in the 33-50% +/- range ... it was the lesser (Model #100312-3L) that I put somewhere in the -30% range, in fact reports where in the beginning that this card didn't even have the Dual Bios switch on it ... I think as Sapphire ran out of product they began to intermix the DIRT3 cards with this one or something ... they are almost TWIN cards so ?

Quote:

GOOD = Sapphire DIRT3 edition (Model #100312-3SR) @ about 33-50%+/- {w/ Dual Bios Switch, same method as the TOXIC Edition.}

$260.00 After MIR @ NewEgg ... (I've seen reports all over the map about the DIRT3's unlocking potential, especially now with the Antilles GPU Bios on so many of them, so? Suggest reading this disclaimer convo.)

FAIR/POOR = Sapphire HD-6950 Dual Fan 2GB edition (Model #100312-3L) @ about -30% {w/ FLASHING or Dual Bios Switch, have seen people say BOTH it HAS and DOSE NOT HAVE a Dual Bios switch ?}

$240.00 After MIR @ NewEgg ... (The reports are even MORE all over the map about This Card than the DIRT3's unlocking potential, so? Suggest reading this disclaimer convo.)

And while some of you might have GREAT success, you tend to be the LUCKY ones ... go back and read about a years worth of postings on OCN and NewEgg and other sites and you'll find just as many people if not more reporting they had NO LUCK unlocking their cards. It's my GUESSTIMATE, but based on several months worth of reading and researching when I was shopping for my card, and at the time at least, June/July/August - usually 1 in 4 to 2 in 4 people claimed they could unlock their cards, while TOXIC owners seemed more like 3 out of 4 reported success, and like I mentioned as now the Admin of the TOXIC club I can track our owners list and we've reported as high as an 84% success rate with a few people still needing to tell me if they unlocked or not, so it could have gone up even more, as I only counted the successful unlocks against ALL the TOXIC cards owned by our group. Anyways the DIRT3 is a Very Good card, and the rate might be higher than I'm estimating ... maybe YOU should run a sample size of at least 100 cards and let us know the results wave2.gif

And I mean UNLOCK as in having the HD-6970's 1536 shaders show up on your card, it just that having a card with the DUAL BIOS provides you a Safety net if you screw up, as unlike the Sapphire cards many do not have the Shaders ON THE CARD from the factory and you'd have to FLASH them onto the 2nd Bios position.  Almost any HD-6950 card can attempted to be flashed, even the 1GB cards that I previously thought couldn't, but ANY card without a DUAL BIOS runs the risk of BRICKING the card, and it's a PITA to repair a BRICKED Card, and you still may NOT be one of the lucky ones that have a GPU Chip that CAN have the unlocked shaders show up, as it's an AMD thing that a certain amount of GPU chips were laser cut and/or BIOS Disabled from being able to do this Free HD-6970 Upgrade. You'll also notice that MOST of the cards I list are the HIGHER END PERFORMANCE cards from each manufacturer, and ones with Factory OC's so IF they get the Shader Unlock they are close to HD-6970 performance ... the TOXIC being the closest at 880 MHz / 1300 MHz / 1536, but even it needs a slight End User OC to the Memory to reach the 1375 MHz level of a 100% HD-6970. So that's why SOME people risk FLASHING the HD-6970 BIOS onto their cards to reach the 880/1375/1536 level by default w/o having to OC the card, but I prefer the way Sapphire handled this IMO.

Anyways good luck to whoever wants to attempt this and buy a HD-6950 thinking they might be one of the lucky ones and get the Free HD-6970 upgrade ... works for some, but not all, and of course if you're the unlucky one You think this whole thing is a scam wth.gif

If I were you I would just wait for the new cards to come out in Jan, because there would be no point in buying a 6950 and unlocking it, then the 7950 comes out and craps all over it.

Sure there is ... as you get to use the HD-6950 NOW, the HD-7950 most like will take a few months to reach the store shelves after the intial 7xxx series release, as they always release the lower end stuff first. Also how much will the HD-7950 cost ? most likely it will be $100 more then a HD-6950 until it's been out for awhile and the prices come down, but then again MORE WAIT time, and the 6950 will go down in price to match so it will always be cheaper. So it's up to him ... but there are points for buying a 6950 today and not waiting, up to him if they are worth the difference or not, plus he can buy the 6950 today use it, and replace it with a 7950 later on if he wants as well ... there are always options. thumb.gif
