This runs pretty cool. On max load for 5 mins I got a High of about 50 c on the four cores.

I used a crude overclock method initially by switching the baseclock on the motherboard jumpers from 133 to 166.

This gave over 4.1GHz, but the intel turbo came in and bluescreened the machine.

Having disabled the Intel turbo and other unwanted settings, I set the options to default, then upped the basecore in the BIOS to a 166.

The multiplier on this MSI X58 allows 24x so this was used. I opted for the Auto voltage and Ram options. (which seem pretty good)

The resultant overclock is a stable and adequate 3.99GHz.

How much faster can a i7 960 run? Most people opted for the cheaper chips and the new 2600K.

I'm sure you will agree an i7 960 @ 3.99GHz is faster than a 2600K @3.4..............

I'm running a 930 at 4.2ghz with 1.31 volts.

You can probably do the same thumb.gif

Thanks for giving me a realistic ceiling,

But I think I will leave it bed in at this frequency for a while.

I left it a few months on the standard 3.2GHz before I clocked it.

What baseclock are you running?

I'm currently on a 166.5 as you can see from CPU-Z..........whistle.gif

a higher bclk (or baseclock) makes afaster system, it makes the cpu talk to the ram and other components faster. You should see how high you can take your bclk, just turn your multi right down while testing so that any instability encountered is defenitely coming from the bclk, then you raise the qpi voltage to stabilise

My BCLK is at 205; you have some room to go up. FWIW, a BCLK of 200MHz with a multi of 20 and memory at 1600MHz makes for some nice even numbers all the way around for 4GHz. biggrin.gif I'd bump it to 21 for 4.2 though since Bloomfields seem to like odd multis in my experience.

I'm jealous. BIOS update to fix an issue with memory took me from 1.32ish to 1.39ish at 4.3. (Same for 4.2 fwiw)

hardly tongue.gif even when all 4 cores are used it bins up 1 extra mult with stock settings making it 3.5ghz. SB also has 14% more IPC so it would be roughly the equivalent of 3.99ghz, what a coincidence eh?

my multiplier is at 21x, baseclock 200.

This is my exact situation. A 20 or 22 multiplier doesn't sit well in my setup.

I have had a fiddle with the settings and have decided the 3.99 clock is Optimum. (Something to do with a limit on the components to 166 MHz) bottleneck.

I think the faster 167+ baseclocks in reality transfer data no faster than the 166 MHz baseclock. (even though the CPU is running faster)

I have decided the 3341.6 MHz on optimum settings with Intel tubo tech is fast enough for everyday use. the faster clock of 3.99 had no visual
benefit in BF3 and having switched some of the CPU options 'off' in the BIOS to achieve the 3.99 clock actually, the 3.3416
seemed faster. It certainly is more stable as the 3.99 very occasionally crashes.

The 2600K processor is probably next on my mods list assuming I don't feel flush in which case a 990x 'Extreme'
Processor may be incorporated with a third gtx 580 (it can achieve 3.73GHz on 6 cores and 12 threads with Intel turbo). Those Mars IIs are pissing me off. mad.gif
and at GBP 1100 EACH I certainly will not be putting two in SLI !! NEW CPU and extra GTX 580 it is.

ANYONE WITH A GTX 580 DDR5 (GAINWARD) PLEASE CONTACT ME
