Opinions... Norton vs. other virus scans?

Thread Starter
I'm running on a 2-week-old clean install and it's stinking fast. I know Norton can significantly slow that down sometimes, and I was wondering... Are the free ones like AVG as good? It's Norton 2004 if that makes any difference (I doubt it does...)

Just wondering your opinions... and while opinions alone are great, please back your opinion up... preferably with a lot of personal/professional experience or an online article.

Don't use Norton, the free ones like AVG or Avast! are actually better, if you want real security for a price, then go with Kaspersky IS 6.0 or Personal.

I second Kaspersky

Most new virii are tested against the leading AV programs to make sure they won't get detected. In real-world applications Norton and McAfee only have about a 20% hit rate.

Do not get Avast! Pro, I had it got a virus tried to scan it the program wouldnt find it! So I DL'd AVG Free found it in minutes...

There was an article in the new Maximum PC about these types of programs that stop virus/spyware/adware/etc. Good article gives you links and tells you the price (some are free).

I hate Norton. It is a resource hog and constantly bugs you with annoying pop-ups that will cause any active program to minimize and go to the pop-up message. Its especially bad when your gaming and right when your about to get a kill, it gets minimized just so you can read about Norton's other products.

Not only that, it never actually caught a virus. Id have to go into safe mode and delete the infected files myself. Ive also tried McAfee and found it not to be much better.

Im using AVG now and it works much better. It doesnt hog resources and it actually works. Not to mention its free, which is much better than paying a premium for something that doesnt work.

I use AVG Free, and I have no probs whatsoever. IT's often upgraded, and uses almost no processing power.

I am an IT consultant, and it seems that a good part of my time is spent removing Norton products from my clients machines. Norton Internet Security 2005/2006 can make a really fast machine, well, not. I have seen it corrupt hard drives, and hang during uninstall (requiring the use of special Norton-removing tools).

I usually install AVG Free for my non-commercial clients, and the Pro version for my domain users.
