Mouse Hitching Plz Help

post #1 of 18

Hey,

I have been having a problem ever since I built my new comp with my USB mouse hitching up. Frequently, When I try to move the mouse cursor it will freeze for about a second or less and then come back. This can happen many times in a row and is very frustrating. It happends while on the desktop and equally as often while in games. I know it is not HD relaated b/c i've been monitoring it and it will happen without any activity showing from the HD. Also, I know it is not PSU related b/c I just installed a new PSU (350W to 450W) and it is now happening more often as a matter of fact. I installed the ULi integrated Drivers 2.20 for my Mobo , but when I check in Add/Remove I see the AGP and Ethernet drivers but not the USB so i'm not sure if they installed off of that pack . .

Basically the only thing I can think of it being is an issue with my USB drivers and/or Hardware. It should also be noted that When I try to print with my USB printer 50% of the time it Will cause the computer to cold boot, which is another major problem I am having. This is why I initially thought it was a PSU problem . . Do you think I should attempt to disconnect the Front USB port connector from my Mobo >? or could it be a driver problem ? Any advise from people who have had a similar problem or know of such issues would be greatly appreciated.

This is my current Setup:

AMD Athalon 3500+ (Stock Clock)
AsRock DUAL SATA2 Mobo
Evga 7600GT PCI-E (Stock Clock)
Seagate.10 320GB HDD
OCZ Modstream 450W PSU
1x Optical Drive
OCZ Platinum PC3200 RAM 2x1GB
CM 120mm Blue LED Case Fan
CM 80mm Blue LED Case Fan
LG L203WT 20IN Widescreen LCD

3DMark03 = 12977
3DMark05 = 6033

Thank You in Advance to anyone who can help me fix this very annoying problem.

What are your USB settings in the BIOS? is it set to USB1.0 or USB2.0. Also, is it set to the highest speed available (hi-speed I think)

Yup, it is Hi-Speed, FullSpeed and a last one, which i can't remember. You want "Hi-Speed", or 480MBPS.

But USB is not the thing where I'd expect the PSU to cause issues... odd

I'd check indeed if all your motherboard drivers are installed.

If you go to the device manager, do the USB ports show up normally?

USB 2.0 support is Enabled in The BIOS as is Legacy support for USB , those are the only two options. The PSU is OCZ Modstream 450 W upgraded from Antec 350W truepower. But I had the problem with the old PSU aswell. In Device Manager under USB controllers I have 4x "USB root Hub" , 1x "Standard enhanced PCI to USB host controller" and 3x " ALi PCI to USB Open Host Controller" , All of these are Drivers Provided by Microsoft when I check the Properties section. I'm stuck lol and this is really annoying.

weird.... seems all good to me from here.

What PSU devices do you have connected? Try with just the mouse and see what happens?

I've heard that this issue is sometimes caused by the USB Ports not receiving enough power, I'm not exactly sure how to do it, but I think I vaguely remember something about making windows xp let the ports use more power or something. Try googling it and see what it turns up?

Hmmm. This is probably the best lead so far. I have been reading up on Power management issues for USB devices And I came across a section saying that for every USB root hub you have in device manager you should have 2 corresponding USB ports. . Well I have 4x USB root hub in Device manager and 6 USB ports . . 4 on I/O pannel 2 on Front USB via Mobo Connector. So for Root hubs I have 2 extra . . When I installed this version of Windows it was a SLipped version my friend gave me . . even though XP should pick up on this info itself I would imagine . .

Interestingly aswell when I double click on the Root hubs in Device manager and go to the power tab the First one lists my USB mouse (taking a measily 100mA of the 500mA alotted to each root hub) and 2 available ports. The next 2 also list 3 available ports each and the last one lists 8 available ports ! So it is listing 17 available ports when I only have 6 . . . Maybe this is why it is having issues ?? So do you guys know of a way for me to drop all of those USB hubs and just try to get windows to pick them up again or something ? Because this is really getting annoying lol I can barely play games and cant print or scan either . . Does anyoen know of a way to manually edit how many ports It should have available ? short of that the next thing I will try is disconnecting the Connector for the front USB ports to see if taht helps . .

BTW here is a link to my mobo manual just incase I have some jumpers wrong for my USB or something . . . http://www.asrock.com/Drivers/Manual/939Dual-SATA2.pdf

Thanks for your help Thus far . . .
