Using HTC EVO 3D as a PMP - buying one with a bad ESN?

I was wondering...I've seen EVO 3D's go on eBay for $200 or less in great condition - only caveat being that it has a bad ESN (which doesn't matter to me, since I'm fine on my $30/month T-Mobile plan). And I was wondering...how would it perform as a PMP? I'm particularly interested in the 3D and the HDMI output features of it. I was originally considering getting the Fuji W3 (and I still sorta am, mainly since it's less than $250 and does better 3D), but a EVO 3D would do a lot more, and it'd be nice to have something with a bigger screen and better specs until/if I get a Galaxy Note. (have a HTC G2 now).

How's the battery life when phone calls and the like are completely out of the picture? If anything I wouldn't mind getting one of those super-size Seidio extended batteries.

What's the 3D picture/video quality like, both taking and then watching on the screen?

How's it compare to the LG Thrill/Optimus 3D (which I could ultimately get for ~$400 instead of the Galaxy Note)?

And can it output 3D media over the MHL HDMI cable? My brother just got a new 3D TV and it'd be nice to see some stuff in 3D on the big screen.

Also, somewhat related - what about the Kyocera Echo? I've seen it as cheap as $50 with a bad ESN...and while there's no development for it, I've always wanted to learn how to create stuff for Android...how much HDD space and whatnot would I need to compile ICS for it, if it's even possible?

For battery life I have a Optimus One so I would assume approx 24 hours in battery for just music provided you have Airplane Mode or just basic apps not running in the background. For Video I would have to say 6-7 hours in battery life.

Personally using an Android device without a phone expands the horizons completely in terms of what we had for PMP's. This being all dedicated to just playing music and videos with some basic games.

I get around a 5% battery loss per hour when playing music, but that's with 3G on. Remember though I am rooted with a custom kernel and ROM.

What HBOOT is that phone running?

No idea what HBOOT or ROM or whatever, but I'll probably try and find something vanilla/AOSP because I'm not a big fan of Sense. Any recommendations?

And thanks for the info. Anything else I should know, or any other such device I should consider?

On my evo 3d I get about 3-5 hrs battery life while watching movies in airplane mode, I get about 2-4 hrs battery life watching movies while connected to sprint it mostly depends on the resolution and bit rate of the files I find. The screen is also pretty good, while AMOLED screens will look better this still looks great and I like the higher res compared to most phones prior to the galaxy nexus. When it comes to music it feels like I lose maybe 1% every 10-20 minutes in airplane mode and around 1% every like 10 minutes while connected to 3g or steaming through google music. The 3d camera works decently, it's not the greatest sensor in a phone but it still takes pictures just fine for every day use. I would recommend using MIUI or cm7 for roms. The offical cm7 rom hasn't been updated in months but toast is still apparently planning on working on the evo 3d, most likely waiting for cm9 at this point though. Overall I think it is a good deal at $200, I honest mostly use mine for media anyway. Really the only devices I would recommend over this would be the galaxy s2 and galaxy nexus with their better cpus and screens but you wont be finding any of those anywhere near $200 for awhile.

Thanks for the info, I'll probably get it if only for the 3D content of it (and still get that better 3D camera too). I've looked at the Nexus and GSII and honestly don't see much in them, I'd upgrade to a Note if I was going to spend that much money.

One last question I can't seem to find the answer to, though - does it output 3D media through the HDMI cable?

I can't comment on if it works through the MHL cable, but it does work fine on my DLNA ready TV through the wifi. Pictures unfortunately don't work and I think it has something to do with the format. Videos on the other hand work fine for me, I just have to make sure I set my TV to do Side by Side.
