Rob, the board you linked most likely would overclock. So far, only the Supermicro G34 boards have an OC solution developed at [H]. I think there are a couple guys over there with that particular board overclocked. The overclock is more or less set at 12.5% as far as I know, for all the overclockable G34 systems. Mine is at 12.5% OC, 2400MHz + 300MHz.

bwhiten, I am not an expert at 4P systems, being so new to them myself. With that said, I wouldn't be very comfortable with the system you linked. I know nothing of that motherboard manufacturer. Also, the system is Barcelona based, which is already two generations old for AMD servers, behind both Magny Cours and Interlagos. Upgrade path? Hmm, I'm not sure what other Barcelona class (pin layout) CPUs are available. The price they advertise is the motherboard and PSU only. Add four channels (is it four channels?) worth of RAM, four heatsinks, and four CPUs, and I'm not sure it's a good deal. If your goal is 4P and the budget is tight, maybe you should consider a 4P 61XX or 62XX system, but just start with one or two CPUs and limited RAM, adding more components as money becomes available. I think the best you'd be able to squeeze out system based on the one you linked would be equivalent to a fast Magny Cours or Interlagos G34 2P system.

Maybe someone with better knowledge of Socket F systems can address your interests better.

That's only the mobo and a cheapo PSU, not even 80Plus certified. As for the mobo, it's a last gen mobo and only takes these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819105206 65nm chips with probably horrible PPW.

Linden, thank you for your info. I got a few 6128's on the way but they're only at 2.0ghz.

I've begun saving for my rig. I'm hoping to be able to make it operational by next December. I'm working with a very limited budget at the moment, and it will be getting even tighter in the coming months, but I should be able to swing it.

I am currently trying to decide on PSU and whether to fill all RAM slots or just go for dual channel for each CPU. headscratch.gif

Thanks for the straight talk. I was running a quick search for quad cpu MBs and that popped up.
Wasn't sure where to get the scoop on that board but knew this forum would have the answers smile.gif
After I posted I saw the location as Hong Kong with high shipping. My excitement over price got the better of me.....

Yep, 4 sticks of ram per slot. 1.5v ram, 1333 is all you need, at as low of timings as you can find...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231492

a kit for each cpu is the sweet spot (quad-channel)

IIRC I saw a thread at a different forum (possibly hardwarecanucks?) where a user had adopted the stock AM2-AM3+ cooler to fit onto a G34, the base plate on those are quite a bit larger than the AM3 CPU, and I think the contact it made with the G34 were quite good. Wouldn't be too hard to fab something up to mount it if you got a bit of skill and tools.
