when do u think you'll have those results by? Do you plan on keeping all those setups? If not, maybe we can work out a deal for some $$$$biggrin.gif

Obviously we all are eager to hear results. But while we wait, we can give you numbers from others systems. Which results are you interested in?

TBH, I'm not really sure. I'm just looking for a 2p/4p system for around $2k with the best PPD and PPW no object. What are some good combos for cpu/mobo with model numbers? I just started reading up on 2p/4p systems so it's all new to me.

This post should give you a lot of info, http://www.overclock.net/t/1184791/multiprocessor-computers-f-h-discussion/0_100#post_15965524. But I will give you a run down.

At 2k you have three options:

1) SR-2 with two hex cores.
With this setup you will need adequate cooling because a good overclock will be necessary to get your monies worth. You can get 2 x e5649s for about 800 and a used sr-2 for $450. Then you will need a good psu and cooling. This rig will net you just over 200k.

2) Dual g34 with two 12 cores
. This will cost about 450 x2 for cpus and 200 - 400 for the motherboards. At about 1200 + psu and other parts you will get about 180k.

Neither of those first two options will use your entire budget, so I highly recommend this third option.

3) 4p board. and two 12 cores or four 8 cores
you can get a used board with some looking for about 500, but a new one for 700 - 800. Then you can either get 4 6128s of ebay for 150 each or two 12 cores and expand later. 4 x 8 cores will get you about 250k. Or, with the dual 12 cores, you can eventually to quad 12 cores for 500+K.

Keep in mind you will need:
psu ($75 - $150),
hdd, a laptop drive works ($50)
ram (depends on the setup - I can give you more specific details)
a cheap gpu with the SR-2 ($25)
cooling for each (not quite as nice you choose the g34 setups)

I can give you more specific details about whichever option sounds best. I plan to write up more info on each eventually.

hoth, glad to see a thread like this.
Me and AMD_SLI_GURU were talking about this a few weeks ago.
Getting a 2P or 4P board and making it a dedi folder.
I believe I also talked about it yesterday with the guys in the lounge.

I will end up doing the same. Money isn't wasted, because with the amount of ram + cores. Just think about how many VM's you could be running if and when it wasn't folding.

I will keep my eye in here.

Iirc you'll need server windows or linux...desktop win only supports a max of 2 physical CPUs.

Yep. Ubuntu Server ftw. Already have it all planned out.

What advantage do anticipate from Ubuntu Server that vanilla Ubuntu wouldn't give? Just curious. I took the Linux plunge - for Folding, WOW - about four weeks ago so still have tons to learn. Hat's off to the excellent guides here. thumb.gif
