*OLD* Ideas for a new L-Shaped desk?

So this is my current setup/desks:

359

As you can see it isn't the best desk/s at all. I'd love to get a full size case and another monitor, but I have no where to put it so I'd still have room to do my school work (Home schooled Sophomore). I'd love to get a nice IKEA Gallant Corner desk but I don't have the $200 for it, nor the $200+ to get it shipped to where I live so, I'd like to build one. My Dad and I would be doing this project together if we do do it, and we'd have all the tools necessary, but I wanted to get some ideas from you guys first. After all my computer setup wouldn't even exist without OCN, so thank you all!

Okay so as you can see in the pic I listed the dimensions on the area I have to work with. I may be able to squeeze a few more inches out of all the dimensions if I must. I'd like to be able to have enough room to upgrade my case to a full ATX and have room for three 20"-22" monitors, and as you can see I have no place to put my headphones other than hanging them on the drawer. Also the only speakers I can even think to fit on here are some old Emachine 2.0 speakers. I can't get most of, if not all, the wires/cables to stay behind my desk ether, which really bugs me (My family says I have OCD .rolleyes.gif) The keyboard and mouse are a bit crowded also..

I know I'm not giving too many ideas as to what I want, because I have never done anything like this, although I would have no problem actually getting it done with my Dad's help haha.
This idea isn't set in stone yet, like I said, but I'd still like to hear your guy's ideas. Also there isn't really a budget yet, but I am a Sophomore only working 12h/hr. a week at minimum wage so yeah, not rich over here haha. thumb.gif

Thanks,

That sucked all the wind out of my sails. Even before I opened your thread that was going to be my suggestion.

Does your case have to sit on top of the desk? Can it sit under the desk, maybe even attached, but hanging below, sorta where those drawers are at on the right side of the desk.

Ever thinking about mounting your monitors and speakers on the wall? It saves desk space, but may interfere with your OCDness about wires.

If anything, I would have your monitors on some sort of rise keeping them off the direct top surface of the desk. This also allows for more desk space. Maybe some sort of shelf attached to the back side of the new desk. This will work well for both L shaped and corner desk set ups.

I've thought about mounting my monitors before, however I don't know about the having my case attached or below my desk, my case has a window and that seems like it would defeat the purpose of having a window.

I wonder how hard it would be just to do a "look alike" of an IKEA Gallant?

Try looking on craigslist. Go to craigslist and just type in galant and choose the furniture category. I just did a search and someone is selling a galant in my area.

Found one for $300 but that is still a little too much for me. Thanks for the idea though.. Really wish I had an Ikea store close by.

why not just get a sheet of 5/8" plywood, cut it into the "L" shape of the desired size and then add some either premade table legs or cut a 4"x4" to the desired length?

It wont be the prettiest table, although you could paint it with a heavy paint like a garage floor paint to hide the grain.

Keep checking up craiglists for a galant or vika amon is my cuggestion. I was able to pick one up in my area WITH EXTENSION for 50$ from people who were moving. Its YMMV of course, but so worth it.

Build one with your pops. Some sad day when he's gone you're not going to look back and remember fondly the day you bought a desk from craigslist/ IKEA. In college we used to use old doors. Maybe you're dad is the Bob Villa type and has a better solution. If it's more of a pain in the ascott for him than a chance to hang out just buy one from craigslist, a garage sale, or a goodwill.

So decided on a design, something similar to this:

450

(Image owner is 1ceTr0n Original post link: Original Post)

So we are going to check out some wood for it at Menards, hopefully this desk will become a reality lol
