600$ build - Page 4

Agreed with above posters, the A8-3850 is by far the best option for an HTPC build. And if he does decide he wants to game, it can do that too. Get the APU with some quality ram, and you will be set. Even the a6-3650 would be enough for just HD movie watching.

Everyone has an opinion, these are technical topics with many solutions.

Lets all be teachers AND students. Don't take it personally =)

I will say that this makes me want to build the HTPC I've been putting off forever.

I am as anti pre-built as you can get but I do want to ask what is out there already built to watch BLU-ray with home theatre level audio.I ask as it seems there is a very high level of component and software matching required for the BLU-ray/home theatre audio route.

OCN iCrap's 5770 for sale That'd be great for a HTPC especially at that price point.

I see plenty of Llano HTPC builds, and reviews indicate it handles HD playback fine.

i was referring to motherboard integrated graphics not APUs. APUs are a great choice also.

A6-3650 $90
Asrock A75M micro ATX $75
2x2gb DDR3 $25
Media Center Remote $25
Quiet SeaSonic PSU $40
Hard drive... Not sure if he is going to store media on this or on another system...$100
Case, I would suggest just looking at Newegg or similar at HTPC cases. I would choose either Silverstone or nMedia $80
Rii mini keyboard with trackball $40
Now if you want to go linux with like XBMC or something I would switch to the Intel g620 (unless you need 3D). Which could drop the system about $20-30
This computer will play any movie you throw at it.
What is his speaker/stereo setup? Does he have a receiver with HDMI (if so no sound card is needed)? Does he just use his TV, Logitech, or sub $500 speaker setup (if so no sound card is needed)?

The way I set up a HTPC for myself or friends is..
What are you going to be doing? Movies, 3D, music, netflix, hulu, gaming
Then I choose my case that I want to try, looks good or mod? I say mod b/c I just made a ITX htpc out of an old Xbox1
What kind of stereo set up? Nobody I know will have a 4k+ stereo to ever consider a sound card and every new system you build can support the new audio formats.
What OS are you going to be using? Windows 7 or some flavor of linux
Then I choose my parts. Lately either Llano or g620 (i3 is way overpriced for htpc but g620 can't do 3D). I will then know if I need to go ITX or mATX since I choose my case.

Try this:

APU: A4-3400 2.7 Ghz - this is 65W TDP processor which would would save you money on electricity and would work great for your HTPC, it is much better than the A6 & A8 (100W TDP) in terms of power draw, and for an HTPC the IGP on the A4 (AMD Radeon HD 6410D) is more than enough and you don't need more than 2 cores if this is going to be a media player! - $70
MoBo: ECS A75F-M2 FMI Socket - I used this for my build, great MoBo no problems so far, and at the price it is unbeatable! - $50
Case: Silverstone GD05 Black - great case for an HTPC, free shipping on Amazon! The depth is awesome and would fit easily in a any media console! - $84
PSU: Cooler Master GX 450W - $40 (after MIR)
ODD: LG Blu Ray Reader - $60
OS: Win 7 Home Premium. You did not include an O/S in your parts list, unless you are planning to run Linux/XBMC, this is what I would recommend! - $100
SSD: Patriot Pyro 60 GB (boot drive - only for O/S) - $80
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1.5 TB - cheapest and comparatively better one available right now! - $120

Total Cost: $604

The major cost item is your HDD because of the flood in Thailand, if you can use any old HDD's for the time being you might get a larger and better drive for less or the same price after production is restored to normalcy and the current sky-high prices drop!

Good luck!

p.s: If your friend is going to use this as a media player just for movies and music, this would be more than sufficient without a discrete graphics card! heck it would even work for some games (on low settings), you might want to get a discrete card if you are going to use this machine for hardcore gaming, other wise the IGP on the A4 is more than enough!

Sorry, few more questions

- that sound card will fit in that pci-ex16 slot? Haven't put a comp together in a few years. amd 350u will play bluray with no problems either?

- that HDD is the majority of the price...we're under budget, so it's not a big deal, but would it matter if we go for a cheaper drive? or two cheaper drives?

- that power supply is sufficient?

- he does have a receiver, but it's hooked up through the TV? he is not using optical out right now

- the TV is a sony bravia - so we shouldn't have any problems with using it as a monitor correct?

- he wants to sit on his couch and use a wireless keyboard - any recommendations for a mouse/keyboard remote?

lastly:

- will this case work?

his receiver has HDMI on it...so im guessing he has no need for a sound card....he has a PC IN with RGB and audio left on his TV.
