Mixing a 2x2gb and a 2x4gb kits with identical timings and frequency's.

I picked up a 2x4gb kit of g.skill C9 1600 to replace my 2x2gb kit of g.skill C9 1600. Would using both be counterproductive in terms of performance? Or would it work "okay" enough to help overall? (yes yes I know its not a good idea to mix and match but the ram is exactly the same except for size)

Using both will most likely lose dual channel. RAM typically must be the same in both speed, timing, and size.

It really comes down to the motherboard. You have to try it yourselves.

It will work fine. It will run in dual channel. Assuming you have the two slots currently in dual channel (which you definitely will), one channel will have 8gb and the other channel will have 4gb. And lastly, memory controller is on the CPU so it really comes down to the CPU.

You won't lose dual channel if you put one kit in one set of slots and the other kit in the other set of slots.

The memory timings will reflect what is in the BIOS.
If Auto the timings will default to a standard profile, normally the Jdec 1333.

If 1 set is 1600 and you set the BIOS to run 1600 but the other set is only 1333 you have to test the lower speed kit for stability, because you are overclocking that kit to 1600 speeds..
If the memory is stable your good to go! thumb.gif

anyways yes multi-size kits can run together and stay in dual/multi channel mode.

I am running a 2x1 and a 2x2 kit for 6 gigs in my rig. Keep the kits together in the appropriate slots and they will run channeled just fine.
