CaseLabs Merlin SM8 Update: [See New Thread: SM8 Product Launch] - Page 19

Hey Jim,

Out of curiosity, and this may be a manufacturing nightmare, but will these cases have a built-in ability (or perhaps an attachment) for hot-swapping drives? Maybe something like the mesh fan attachment for the MAGNUM series except for easily removing hard drives? This might be a huge pain in the ass, but something that's on my mind.

I think the cost would be too high, as it would require custom pass-through pcb's and other stuff. You might want to check out Lian Li's offerings, they can be mounted in the flex-bays (5.25"), and some of them also comes with a black interior option to fully integrate with the black cases from case labs:)

You mean check out Lian Li's offerings and use them in the Case Labs, is this correct?

Aye nevermind, I clearly had a brain lapse. I wouldn't want to ruin that beautiful machine finish on the Case Labs by putting in some Lian Li junk though. frown.gif

I understand, as I said, that it may be a manufacturing nightmare, but I'd still be willing to pay a moderate price for some nice swappable drives. Not to mention the fact that they would probably be able to be used in other cases and applications as well.

No pressure on you though Jim, it looks like those Lian Li ones would be perfect provided that there are enough 5.25" drive bays on the Merlin. I'm planning on doing RAID 10 so I would need at least 4. thumb.gif

The problem with integrated fans, fan controllers, hot swap bays, etc., is that they all tend to use very low end components in order to keep cost down. They are a "sort of" solution that may be fine for the average user who is perfectly happy with typical consumer case (nothing wrong with that), but our customers don't really fit that profile and their tendency is to scrap all that stuff and replace with higher quality parts. Essentially, that amounts to throwing money away. Instead of including stuff like that, we focus on building a higher quality chassis. There are several hot swap devices out there that are much better quality than the "free" ones that are included with some cases, so for our users (who tend to be more discriminating), they are probably the best alternative.

I definitely understand about integrated fans (would immediately replace them anyways) and fan controllers (a personal preference and liable if broken), and I can also see your point with hot swap bays adding to costs, but boy would that be a fantastic accessory for any enthusiast case! Damn Jim...just when I was beginning to think you were invincible. tongue.gifwink.gif

Just kidding. I was looking at a few online that appear they would work fine. Of course they don't look anywhere near the quality of your workmanship and certainly would not match the case, but they would definitely suffice. Just promise me that you'll make it possible to implement it (are there standards for these kinds of things - one would assume)? I know you could effectively remove the entire front of the M8 and swap it around how you would like - will this be like that?

I'm trying to avoid PCB development for now, but I know it's coming. Once it does, we can start looking at things like hot swap bays. wink.gif

this model in particular looks like it would match just find to the caslabes case design to me....and I dont see why I would need more than 4 HDD hot swaps myself...
