That's true...
But compare, let's say, TJ07 (565x560x220, 480+240 rads without modding) with 800D (609x609x229, only 320 rad without modding) and Cosmos II (704x664x344, 320+240 rads without modding).

319

Quite a difference in size! And TJ07 still has the best watercooling capabilities out of the box despite being the smallest.
So yeah, a relatively small case (550x550x220 or so, possibly smaller? RX480 is 534mm long!) that can house a 480 radiator would be great. smile.gif

Good to know! Thanks! thumb.gif

Brushed aluminium is the material of choice, I guess? Are there going to be anodized options? biggrin.gif

Given that 480's will be served by magnum and gemini, I'm not sure why they need to be also served by a smaller merlin series. Merlin is supposed to be a design compromise that enables a lot in a smaller case - it's hard to imagine RX480's (and HPTX for that matter) as compromises.

I imagine that the case will be finished in the standard black or white powder coat, brushing or anodizing are very unlikely to be options given what Jim has said in the past.

The ATX/EATX and XL-ATX variants of Merlin will probably be about 22" deep (mATX will be smaller). That is the optimum size to keep the case reasonably large, but get good material utilization and keep cost down. The M8 is a little tight at 20" with oversize GPU's and the HDD cages (It works, but there isn't much room). On the M8 it's relatively easy to move the HDD mount to the other side, but that obviously can't be done with a Merlin case. I think the extra room will be helpful. That size will also allow the use of 480 rads which will allow us to go head to head with a TJ07 at a similar price point (but with our usual bag of tricks wink.gif )

Anodizing will not be an option for the same reasons as the Magnum series.

I'm not aware of design of Gemini series. I just want a product, I don't care how it's called. tongue.gif
I never asked for an HPTX case, such an epic waste of space (imo). thumb.gif

I am looking for a compromise, yes. Besides... "smaller" is a relative term. Every case looks tiny compared to TH10! biggrin.gif

That sounds extremely attractive, thanks for your reply! thumb.gif

Haha yeah I know you weren't asking for HPTX (others have though wink.gif) - my take was that Merlin was supposed to be a singlewide that was in general smaller than the Magnum series (the smallest magnum - the M8 itself can't take a 480). It seems that there will be a little overlap in size between the two series and that Merlin will represent everything from a TJ07/800D alternative down to mATX lan boxes. Gemini is the updated Magnum design coming after Merlin.

I guess my worry was that the smaller merlin's won't deliver as much due to the larger merlin's feature creep into magnum territory.

How do you improve 'em anymore?
And hopefully the mATX merlin won't be just a "lan box" but a fully fledged wc box (lol as fully fledged as it can be)

I'm assuming a CaseLabs lan box is still capable of decent water cooling wink.gif

Not sure if this was covered but will the merlins feature a removable mobo tray and allow them to be flipped to inverted ATX?
