[OBR] New 7970 Performance Slides - Paper launch moved to next week. - Page 9

Looking at that Tessellation slide,

337

though 79xx improves up the 69xx performance considerably didn't Nvidia already have a huge lead in Tessellation @ 5xx vs 69xx and doesn't this improvement just put 79xx in more of a head to head with Nvidia 5xx? I don't have any Tessellation comparison numbers for Nvidia 5xx to AMD 69xx so if someone could crunch those numbers that might give us a real indication of how the 7970 would compete head to head to the GTX 580, at least in Tessellation...

If this is true. Why? PC gaming is being leashed by consoles. How many games have pushed high end PC components since 2007....2-3 a year? And they are often badly ported or poorly coded. rolleyes.gif

Wait if this is true, does that mean I have to buy a new mobo that supports PCI E 3.0 instead of 2.0?

PCI-E 3.0 is backwards compatible with 2.0/2.1.

No. It can work in PCIE 1.0, 1.1, 2.0.

Nevertheless if the 7950 ends up being under $350 I will buy one.

i highly doubt that not at launch anyways there 5850s and 6950 went for a lil over 350 usually

The lower performance of tessellation with 6xxx is rather exaggerated. 6xxx definitely does take a larger hit than Nvidia (roughly double in Crysis 2), but the real problem is just that current GPUs in general really just aren't ready for the asinine implementation of tessellation that was implemented in Crysis 2.

Also, even a 55% increase in performance is a large improvement over the GTX 580, but how much of that can be attributed to the new tessellation engine instead of the increase in raw performance is unknown.

So where would the GTX 580 be on that graph, and how much of an improvement does 79xx make upon the 580's tessellation numbers for those games?

Damn.. looks really good. The price of 7970 might be a bit too much for my wallet. Guess I'll have to settle with a 7950. Can't wait for the reviews/benchmarks to come out. If they show that 7950/7970 is worth the money from upgrading from my 6870, then I'll get it. If it increases performance by only a little, I'll just crossfire my rig with another 6870 and wait til nVidia's next stuff comes out or until 8000 series come out lol
