DRAM Frequency is incorrect according to CPU-Z?

Thread Starter
Hi all,

I just made a quick overclock on my old pc .

I OC'ed an AMD 5000+ from 2600Mhz to 3000Mhz.
I did it by increasing the FSB to 231 cause it isn't a Black Edition so multiplier locked.
I'm using 2 x 1 gb DDR2 800 and lowered the RAM speed from 400mhz to 333mhz in the BIOS to ensure stability while stresstesting.
It passed prime95 but when I look in to CPU-Z. The DRAM frequency is 266mhz instead of 333. I went back in to the BIOS and selected 400mhz...But still 266mhz in CPU-Z.

I thought that by increasing the FSB I would also increase my RAM frequency? How is it possible that it only runs 266mhz? I expected 400+mhz.

Thanks in advantage:thumb:

Maybe you arent understanding what people are trying to say or maybe I am not understanding you. Lowering the CPU multiplier and the RAM speed (100,133,166,200) while maxing out your FSB tells you what is the MAX FSB your mobo will support. Lets say it's 278mhz.

Then you run your RAM speed at a 1 to 1 ratio with your FSB and it will tell you what your MAX RAM speed is. Lets say it's 242mhz.

Then you restore your stock CPU setting to whatever it is (lets say it is 10) and you get 2.42Ghz. If it is not stable then you would have to either lower the mutiplier or up the voltage. Am I right CHIPDEATH?

If we take your question at face value (meaning either method results in the same clockspeed), then no, it will not always yield the best results. Why? If you run your RAM at super high clock speeds to match your FSB, you will most likely have to loosen your timings and your command rate. You may find you have fast RAM that just doesnt perform better than slower RAM with better timings.

I see.. This is an answer to my other topic about the CPU/DRAM ratio right? tongue.gif

So technically to achieva a 1:1 ratio. My fsb frequency has to be exactly the same as my DRAM base frequency?
And to do achieve such a high ram speed I have to loosen the timings?

What do you suggest? Should I get in to this or is the result neglectable?

My current rig has a 965BE running overclocked at 3.8ghz using only the multiplier. To the fsb is 200
My ram runs at 800mhz (1600mhz ddr)

On this rig it is impossible to achieve a 1:1 ratio because i have to achieve a 800mhz fsb or lower the ram to 200mhz (ddr400)?

Is this correct?

technically but the performance capabilities are still there and it makes your ram run cooler too right
it should lower its self too
