Advice On Upgrade Path

Thread Starter
Hi guys, I just got my brother to buy BF3, but his computer needs a few upgrades. I have $75 I am willing to spend, but I'm not sure what to do first, a quad core Phenom, or another 4850. He plays on a 1680x1050 monitor, and currently gets about 30fps on low/medium settings with all AA and such off. If I did get another 4850, would that dual core bottleneck it? Or if I got the quad Phenom, would I notice any real performance increases (as it would be a while until he bought the 4850, so I want to make the biggest impact first)? I should also note that I am getting a C2D E7400 (OCable to 3GHz) system from my friend, would that be better?

His Specs:
Athlon II X2 250 @ 3.6GHz
Sapphire HD 4850 512MB @ 725MHz
ASRock M3A785GXH/128M mobo
4x1GB Kingston 1066MHz 7-7-7-20 (or something like that) RAM
Antec 620c

If the GPU is above 90% usage in BF3 then the performance changes would be minimal. But if it's struggling to get that high then a new CPU would be ideal. CPU's tend to be viable longer than GPU's anyways, so it's a pretty wise purchase.

Ok, I'll check on that usage. Also, by Phenom quad I meant Phenom II quad, probably the 955 or so.

I'd go in for the quad core instead since that would serve future needs better (multi-threaded games will soon become the norm). Any Xfire/SLI config will be bottlenecked by a dual core. Also, there is no real point going in for another 4850 since it's WAY outdated and most games that are hitting retail are all DX11. I'd suggest saving up for better GPU. You can also keep that 250, OC it and go in for something such as a Radeon 6770-based GPU. It's DX11, respectable mainstream performance and is a better bet than going in for another 4850. The 250 just about matches the E7400, performance-wise.
