Getting an iPad 2 for musical use...anyone know how to connect it to my setup for recording?

I guys, as the title says, im getting an iPad as its got some awesome musical apps that in the long run will save me a loada money....and space. Anyway i have a Focusrite Saffire Pro 14 hooked up to two krk monitors. I mainly use Reaper as a DAW but would eventually like Cubase (£££). Anyway, im not sure how to go about recording the iPad? Where and how do i plug it in to my setup?

Also, does the iPad2 have any good drum apps available? I know there is garage band but was wondering if there are any that are better for more complicated beats? Im going to be needing something where i can incorporate wierd time signitures and double bass drum beats. I want to be able to create the beat without having to tap the whole thing out like here. Or do you guys reckon something like Addictive drums?

Many thanks guys smile.gif

Lol, well with all the music apps available there must be a way to connect it to your PC and record into a DAW like Cubase etc... I know the iPad supports MIDI so if there isnt a way of creating a MIDI track and using the iPad as an input then what the hell is the use of it. I dont want to record on the iPad....i just want to use it to record with.....if you get me. Im going to an Apple store tommorow and i will come back here and let you know what the outcome is.

EDIT: Ive just wondered....maybe its wireless?

This guy is in a band called Dream Theatre (dont know if you know of them) and he records with the iPad. Also, the Gorillaz' latest album was ALL recorded with iPad.

There are different solutions to this problem. However I will give a warning though: Mixing professional sound equipment with home equipment can create many interesting problems. I myself have gone through a lot of problems with mixing professional and home audio.

Two off the top of my head:

Apogee JAM- female quarter inch to the 30-pin connector. You would then need an application to record. I know they advertise this as a guitar connector but it might be able to be used for other signals too.

Shure X2U: female XLR to Female USB port. The only downfall with the Shure X2U is that is requires power from the USB port. So you would have to get a powered USB dock to hook the ipad and Shure X2U together. I think you also might need another converter for the iPad.

RE: Getting an iPad 2 for musical use...anyone know how to connect it to my setup for recording?

I went into Apple and they didn't know....not sure if im gonna bother getting one now. All I want to know is if I can connect it to my Saffire pro 14 audio interface to record into Reaper/Cubase....and if so, how? I'm surprised no one in Apple knew. I mentioned MIDI and DAW and they were lost. They said they know about Apple stuff only and nothing else......I felt like I was asking about a PC in PC world where the shop assistant knows nothing and I know more. They did say an aux cable could be used but I don't know lol.

To the post above me....what do you mean by mixing professional and home audio? Please read the first post and if you know, tell me if I can use my equipment mentioned. I'm not buying an extra dock etc.... For over £500 I expect it to connect without having to purchase extras. Thanks again. Sorry for the rant but I am disappointed with the staff I spoke to.

I'm designating the iPad as a "home use" device. For recording, I personally use a multitrack Yamaha recording board or the LS9 Sound board. That's what I mean by mixing "home use" and "professional use." Personally, if I was in your situation: I'd try to run a spdif line from your device into my computer and record with that. Saves money from buying an iPad and other connectors. Sorry for the late reply
