Linksys E4200 troubles

Ok. A few months ago, I bought a Linksys E4200 to replace my dead WRT54G2 v1.5. Got it, loved it. But I was at school at the time, I used the router to run my own personal network between my Desktop, Laptop, Xbox, etc. (without getting slowed down by my school's network - plus having my own personal Wi-Fi). I do the same thing at my house. I know normally, to get one router to work behind another, you have to turn off DNS and change the IP to one outside the range of the router it is behind. At school, I never I had to adjust anything for some reason. At home, it was a different story.

At home, I had to change the IP address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.2.1, changed it from a "Gateway" to "Router" and disabled the DNS server - this worked just fine with the WRT54G2. But not so much with the E4200. For one thing, just changing the IP address was a pain. If I changed anything else along with the IP address at the same time, then I wouldn't be able to get back into the router after rebooting it. So I finally figured out that I needed to change the IP, and just the IP, reboot and then go about changing everything else. After doing this, I could then get through the E4200 to the primary router and the internet. However, I could no longer get into the E4200 and I still couldn't connect to the Wi-Fi from the E4200. I suspect that it has something to do with the E4200's firmware.

Kind of a conundrum. I can get into the router and access it's Wi-Fi, but I can't connect to the rest of the home network or the internet - or I can access the rest of the home network and the internet, but not the router or it' Wi-Fi.

Any ideas? The main router is also a WRT54G2 (v1, instead of v1.5) with all the default settings.
I'm also not opposed to installing a new firmware - so long as I can continue to make use of the simultaneous 2.4Ghz/5Ghz Dual Band - since I was never particularly thrilled with the 'everyone who uses our products must be a computer-illiterate moron' attitude it takes every time you have to reset the router and it doesn't detect he Linksys software on your computer (I actually suspect that when you access the router, you're not accessing a webpage - like you do with the WRT54G2 - but a software program).

I cannot.

I can ping the central router (the home's WRT54G2), 192.168.1.1, but all the requests time out when trying to ping my router (the E4200), 192.168.2.1
One thing I've noticed, if I completely reset the router and set it back up they way I have been (separate from the rest of the main network), it continues to work just fine, right up until I connect to the rest of the home's network. Then it stops responding. The other curious thing - that further leads me to believe that it's more software than web pages inside the router - is that when I disconnect the E4200 from the rest of the network again, it remains unresponsive.

So I was comparing the pages for each router's configuration options, and I noticed something. The WRT54G2 has an option, "Operating Mode" under Setup>Advanced Routing where you can decide whether the router functions as a Gateway or Router, and you have to select "Router" on any internal routers. But on the E4200, under the same menu tree, there is no "Operating Mode" options, instead there is NAT (default - enabled), Dynamic Routing (default - disabled, not able to be changed to "enabled" until NAT is set to "disabled").

They both have the same Static Routing options.

At this point, I'm thinking it's a better idea to just install a new Firmware for at least the E4200, and possibly the WRT54G2 (which I was just informed is being replaced with an E2000 for Christmas - so we'll see how that firmware behaves).
Any suggestions for Firmware replacements? Preferable one that will work on both an E4200 and E2000 - bonus if it works on a WRT54G2 as well.
