[MacMall] ZR2740w $629 Shipped

Overall a very good monitor expect for the AG coating that many do not like. If the AG coating doesn't bother you or it's setup in a very bright area, this is a great deal.

It uses the same panel from LG as the U2711 (different back light) so the amount of AG coating should be about the same. The 27" Apple Cinema Display uses the same panel as well but without any AG coating.

For gaming I would choose the HP as it has a lot less input lag, deeper blacks and no RTC overshoot compared to the U2711. The U2711 would be better for photographers because of the wide gamut CCFL back light and OSD.

In a nut shell I agree. If you plan on gaming go with either zr27 or the Apple. They both have the extreme opposites when it comes to the screen coating

I've had this monitor and I hate the thick AG coating with an intense passion. It is far more aggressive than any other AG i've ever seen. (also the same AG as the u2711) While the colors, uniformity and quality were perfect -- the AG ruined it for me. This applies to the U2711 as well -- the AG is the exact same as the HP model.
You can minimize the perception of the AG by turning the brightness up, but then the blacks aren't deep -- and the brightness doesn't help if you're in a room
that is well lit. White backgrounds will appear "grainy" and dirty in a well lit room, but in a dark room with no light you don't notice it as much.

I've used LCDs for years and most IPS screens have an unbelievably aggressive AG coating, way more aggressive than what most TN panels use. I just don't
understand it. IF they're going to produce a screen costing 700-1200$, why use that STUPID AG coating? I dunno what most TNs use but most of them have a much
less aggressive coating that doesn't shimmer.

Huh? the u2711 isn't backlit, it is CCFL edge lit. The u2711 can be prone to IPS glow/backlight bleed because of this. The HP ZR2740W actually uses LED backlightning which is better than what the u2711 uses - the HP as a result isn't prone to IPS glow or backlight bleeding. Luckily, Dell has excellent QA and the u2711s i've seen haven't had big backlight bleeding issues.

Both of these monitors basically look almost exactly identical -- the dell has more ports and OSD, though. The super aggressive AG coating kills the deal for me. I cannot stand it because I do a lot of text work, and any white background in a lit environment will look dusty or grainy on either of these screens. Its sad because they're near perfect otherwise.
