Want to order a Galaxy Nexus probably tonight, few questions first.

So right now I have this crappy messaging phone on my parents AT&T family plan. I'm going to get my own Verizon line and a Galaxy Nexus and I have a few questions:

1) I should be able to transfer my number over to the Nexus right?

2) If I can and do transfer my number tonight, my current phone will stop working and I'll have no phone until I get the Nexus delivered right?

and

3) Do any of you have any opinions on the $5/month protection plan (that includes if your phone is lost, stolen, or damage even by water) is worth it or not? I mean I did have to replace my current phone once but that was because I hit a curb weird on my bike (which I don't really ride anymore) and fell on it while it was in my pocket so the screen was smashed. Other than that I've never broken any phone. Just not sure whether to add another $5 to the bill since it's already gonna be $80/month.

Thanks for any help!

1. Possibly but I'd say it's a slim chance

2. No. You have to deactivate your phone first to render it unusable.

3. $5/mo is worth it for the piece of mind.

You can use your old number. When they activate it, it should automatically deactivate your old line, assuming the contract is up.

Im not sure how the $5 insurance works on AT&T but with T-mobile you can only make two claims per year with a $130 deductible for each claim

With AT&T you will have to pay the same price you paid for the phone while you renewed your contract. So if you paid $200 for your phone, you'll have to pay $200 again. While this may suck, it's much better than paying the full $500-600. This may be different for different phones, I'm not exactly sure.

This makes me wonder if the Galaxy SII refurb I got for a penny would be a penny again... thinking.gif

You can order the Nexus, and your regular phone will keep working. When you get the Nexus, you'll activate it following instructions on the phone itself (very easy), it'll grab a connection and your dumbphone will cease to work. It's seamless.

Thanks everyone. I placed my order last night and got free overnight shipping so it should be at my house Monday (I'm at school currently but I'm heading home for winter break Monday after my 8am final).

I guess I should have looked around though because I bought it through verizonwireless.com and had to pay the full $299 + tax when amazon was selling it for $150 frown.gif, oh well.

I also won't be able to try 4G until I'm back at school in January since I don't get it at home haha.

Still can't wait to get it though biggrin.gif

Enjoy your new phone! I wish I could say the same, but AT&T shipped my phone with the wrong battery. doh.gif

1) Yes, I transferred my number from T-Mobile to my verizon line (with a Galaxy Nexus)
2) No, the number will keep working until you activate the Galaxy Nexus when it arrives. (unless they for some reason activate it for you before shipping it out)
3) Up to you, I decided not to because I have never dropped any of my previous phones (really), or ever had one stolen.

by the way, go into a verizon store and ask about the $50 rebate form you get for any phone when you transfer your number from another carrier. I got $50 off my galaxy nexus (bought from verizon store)
