I tried the rice sized dot, and it hit 120C in seconds. There was a little glob of paste in the center 60% of the IHS. Ive had this card apart very many times trying ways to apply TIM these last couple days to get temps down. This method i used has seemed to net the best stability/temps thus far. I will try again with the Noctua paste tomorrow and get back to the thread.

Pea sized actually sounds right. I've replaced the TIM on my GTX 460s a few times, and because the IHS is so large, you need quite a bit more TIM to cover the surface area appropriately. A tiny dot is fine for CPUs because they are quite a bit smaller. Personally, I would use kind of a chunky line method since the Nvidia IHS is longer than it is wider. That way, you'll cover the important parts. Just make sure the stuff isn't flooding over.

Yeah, I thought I had it about right because it spreads ALMOST to the very edges of the IHS. I will look into it a little more. If I cant get a definitive answer, I have a heatsink in class I wouldn't mind bolting to the card.

Is this a brand new card? Maybe try to rma it...if not, maybe look at cracking off the ihs and repasting it. Check for gtx560 heat spreader mod.

The card was originally one of the $99 Newegg refurbs I think. Im going to be doing some mods, including painting the shroud. I think ill start with completely removing the IHS.

Shroud = hot. C'mon xino you know this. Just slam a 120mm onto the heatsink and forget the slot cooling design. it sucks.

the card went up as far as 140c before i shut off the game i was playing and let it go back to 2d mode where it backed down to 99c idle,it was like this for well over a year i posted a picture of it hitting close to 130c on the forums somewhere. that EVGA 8600GT i had was very tough card even works today ( and i got a EVGA 460 GTX now redface.gif ) biggrin.gif even DuckieHo and them was baffled about it i think. biggrin.gif what puzzles me tho is i did a perfect cleaning and repaste and still didn't change biggrin.gif

Redsun is half right. I put a Delta WFB1212HH on it, 10C lower.

I see people saying that you should only put a rice grain sized amount on GPU's the thing is that size amount is for CPU's guys, some of the most optimal pasting of a GPU is to have JUST enough to see the tiniest bit come out of the sink, it is how stock paste comes, and it works for nvidia 570s and has been shown to work in this case as the temps went up 20 degrees. Like someone said on my welcome thread, take advice on ocn with a grain of salt.
