Should state that I'm a Brit and not sure how 80K to standard of living compares but here's an example:
http://jobview.monster.co.uk/Cisco-Project-Engineer-Consultant-Job-London-London-UK-104020362.aspx
Appropriate to this thread as well, no 3rd level education (i.e. degree) only certification and experience. 50-60GBP is ~ 75USD+

True is doesn't say you need a degree but it is also a very bad job post from a recruitment agency, it only has what skills you should have. there is nothing about the company or what you will actually be doing or what the setup is. It does not instil confidence. Anyhow we getting off topic because we both right, the best you can have is degree+certs+experience and any combo aint to bad either.

GET THAT DEGREE

I have to disagree, but then again I do have pushing 15 years of experience. I broke over $100k/year in my 6th year. Total schooling, um I took 1 class in business my 7th year of work.

Sweet little rack dude.

FHRP (hsrp, vvrp, glbp) are only covered on the switch exam, which is weird, but whatever. If you want to be a rock star you can just setup the exact TSHOOT topology, since it's public knowledge..

Tshoot Topology

Cisco gear has really come down these past 2 years. There is no reason not to just go all 3550's and 2800 series.

GET THAT DEGREE

I'm actually currently in my first year of biomedical engineering and then plan on going to dental school.

I'm 19(almost biggrin.gif) and this is my experience:
cashier at a supermarket
2D drafting for an irrigation design firm specializing in government building and schools(mostly colleges)
website design for a dental office
IT/server admin for 2 dental offices
dental assistant

IMHO this is the order of important for getting a job
1. connections
2. experience
3. degree

Certifications just give you that extra bit but it shouldn't be this way. I fully support certifications. Some companies REQUIRE a college degree for the stupidest things like secretarial work. Have a certification in word programs and that is all you need. If OP is fully certified in all areas, companies WILL hire him. It is better to know more than what you are hired for in case the company expands to different areas.

btw. you need a degree to be a manager at a department store. *** is that? I could do that right now with no degree. I've been head of ordering at the dental office after 4 months being there when other assistants have been there for 5-6 years. I guess it is because I'm organized but still.... it just blows my mind. College is like a requirement for basic jobs.

I agree with both, but da tick is very correct with #1. Without knowing the people I knew, I would never have gotten my job. Attitude and Intelligence are the other factors which got me my job, but without the "who you know" part, I'd still be a student worker making minimum wage.

I've never had any connections for any job I've got, in Ireland we just use recruitment agencies. I still say degree as my number 1, well at least here it is, if you're not educated to third level forget it, its a career in fast food for you.

Well, I'm just finishing my degree, literally just took the last final I had from an online class. The CIO of the IT department I work for is an adjunct instructor at my school, he asked my student worker supervisor (the head of IT department at my school) for someone to work as a temp at his office, he had lost 2 people recently. Had I not been in good with my supervisor, he would have never suggested I work for the other guy. Now I'm a salaried employee for a private college it, and I'll be using the discount at an affiliate school to get a bachelors, possibly masters in computer science, all while gaining real world experience in my field.
