WTB cheap TV tuner

So yea, I just want something dirt cheap that can capture in just decent quality. Doesn't have to have mind blowing performance and crystal clear image quality.

Basically, I want a TV tuner to record the gf's soaps lol. Let's just say she refuses to miss her Y&R and if she misses it on TV, she has to watch this horrid quality youtube upload thats blurry as crap and I think just 240p video res.

So far I've come across the Sabrent TV-USBHD Digital and Analog USB TV Tuner.

Doesn't look that great but it should get the job done for about $25 I though. But if there is a little better out there, I'd go with that. I want to keep it below $50 if possible. I know sub $50 isn't good for a TV tuner, but as I said, I don't want/need anything special, as its just for the gf's soaps... nothing else, and I don't wanna waste a bunch of money on that...
Also, I'm in Canada. Newegg.ca and ncix.com are my fav sources. I know I linked tiger, but I dislike them and would prefer not to have to use them at all... But hey... if the price is right I'll suck it up for one last try.

For signal... I'm not sure what some of the things are, never got into this stuff. So if I need clear QAM or w/e it is I don't know. My setup is just my HDTV plugged into the coax in the wall. I canceled my cable so I just get unencrypted channels (approx 35 channels with about 80 digital music stations). So if theres a specific function needed for that I don't know, which is why I'm asking the helpful crew here at OCN for some help.

Also, since I'm of little knowledge on the subject, its time to learn. If you have some easy explanations or good review/buyer guides for TV tuners/capture cards, feel free to pass that on and I'll include it in my reading. Hopefully next time I'll know enough to make an informed purchase myself smile.gif

So thanks in advance for any and all help. Appreciate it!

Go with Hauppauge HVR-1250. Stay away from USB tuner, they simply are not great.

The Hauppauge HVR-1250 looks to be about $80 after taxes and shipping from a quick search on the egg and ncix... I'd really rather not spend that much as its for such a limited thing and amazing quality is not needed...

How about the Winfast TV 2000 XP Expert by Leadtek or a WinTV-PVR 500 MCE if they are $30 or less.... decent enough quality do you think?

WinTV-PVR 500 MCE and Winfast TV 2000 XP Expert are both analog tuner (outdated). You need digital tuner.

Think you can settle from ebay.ca?

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815100041&Tpk=avermedia%20duet
(This is a dual digital tuner, can record 2 shows at once, watch 2 shows at the same time, or watch 1 and record another one. Does not have analog tuner).

ooo that ebay link looks good. $30 is well within my budget and thats a better card than I was expecting to get obviously from my first suggestion... Thanks for that. The only thing thats iffy for me is the Hong Kong shipping location... There much risk about getting a fake card?

Edit> Also, the thing is without a remote... this might be noob but can I use just any old remote or does this stuff have to be specific... I mean, is this software controlled or does the remote control the hardware directly for recording and other functions. I'd assume software. In which case I have a cheap USB Win media center remote... will this work?

I think you should be okay with ebay purchases. While I have no experience with that particular seller, I did purchase things from Hong Kong from time to time (and they haven't failed me yet). I haven't see any fake TV tuner card out there yet.

As for the remote, as long as it can work with Windows Media Center, you are good to go. I actually don't like the Hauppauge official remote. Its IR software is outdated so I have trouble getting the remote to run on Windows 7. I ended up using a wireless keyboard to navigate through MCE. I also prefer Windows Media Center over WinTV from Hauppauge, much easier to do what you want in MCE.

I'm surprised to see that HVR-1250 cost $80 CAD in Canda, that is totally overpriced.

Picked up the one you linked from ebay. Better tuner than I needed or expected to get for $20 less than my max budget, and it was a small budget. Thanks for the help.
