i3 2100 or 960t build?

Thread Starter
So wich one would be best for me? I will use the 5770 and maybe upgrade from it at some time.
Have been out of the CPU loop since no more LGA755 CPU-s were developed.

The i3-2100 with some random mobo ( since they don't really overclock that much because no K series ) or AMD 960t ( will get decent mobo and overclock it ).

Both options should cost around the same.

I have used this E2140 for 4 years now....

Oh and I use this computer for everything: gaming, surfing, pronz, movies.

EDIT: I would try to salvage most of the stuff from my sig rig ( HDD, PSU, cooling , case etc. )

i3-2100 without doubt. This is coming from an i3-2100 user who does gaming, movie, and folding.

Id personally go for the 960t with a good mobo thats supports core unlocking in hopes to unlock the 5th and 6th core. Even if you dont you still got a good processor that is a 95w quad. You should be buying new ddr3 ram in this combo

More core does not equate to more power. OP made it clear that he/she will not use multi-thread applications. i3-2100 beats 960T for gaming.

The i3-2100 is brilliant for gaming, hangs with the 6 core Phenom II's in terms of FPS.

Go with whichever solution is cheaper overall--you probably won't notice much difference between either.

If you plan to use your pc for gaming, then getting a i3 2100 would be better than a 960T. I highly recommend you to get a $100 p67 board so in the future you can always get a i5 2500k or a i5 3500k for additional performance. If you went with AMD route, upgrading from 960T to FX8150 in the future won't help much in terms of gaming, see the links below...

Yea but at least hes future proofing which would be good for him considering his last upgrade was mentioned 4 years ago. Also what if he wants to do other things down the road which would require physical cores, then the option will be there with a 960t.

BTW he DIDNT actually say he wouldnt being using multi threaded he just mentioned SOME things hed be using it for, so calm down fan boy

A Bulldozer will not be an upgrade to OP. With i3-2100 OP has i5-2500 or i5-3570 with or without K, both are good upgrade. i3-2100 can run 4 threads you know.
