maintaining stable 2000mhz

I managed to get my modules working at 2000mhz after someone suggested raising the uncore, which I forgot about. 1 multiplier less or more and no post. I raised the qpi voltage but I still get crashes on memory stress tests. I wondered if I could do with raising the qpi bandwidh, from 3.6 to 4.4? I've never gotten it to boot at this before, what kind of voltages would I be looking to bump up to? Is sig rig. Thx

Most Bloomfields cannot handle the 4GHz uncore clock that DDR-2000 requires. The reason 1 multiplier more or less won't post is because you need the uncore at least double the DDR rating on bloomfield for the IMC to keep up with the memory, and with 4GHz already borderline another 200MHz pushes it over the edge.

Sometimes keeping QPI over the uncore clock does help, but a QPI speed over 4GHz/8GT/s is extremely hard to stabilize on most X58 setups without using dangerously high PCI-E clocks and tons of voltage.

I doubt you will stabilize DDR-2000 on that CPU.

I hope I can squeeze some worth out of this thing. I've managed to do tight timings at 1600mhz, for about 28 gb/sec in sisoft sandra test. 2000mhz shows 32 gb/sec though. :/ It feels almost stable at 2ghz, I can get it to boot after all and it's only under stress that I get BSOD. I feel with just some minor tuning I could get it steady. Is my thesis of needing to raise the qpi multiplier correct do you think or might I not need to? Also wondering about experimenting with lowering the bclk. IF you were me where would you start?

EDIT: Also which cpu _would_ be good for these modules? I'd assume s-bridge would actually be a downgrade memory-performance-wise due to lack of tri-channel, so is there a tri-channel cpu/chipset that these modules are meant for?

UPDATE: Got it to boot at 166mhz bclk, with a neat 4ghz qpi, 4ghz uncore, 2ghz dram. The qpi is something like 1.435 or so, might be too high? About to do a stress test (posting before in case I don't get a chance to again) and then going to look at incrementally lowering the voltages I've been bumping up.

Pity I won't get the cpu very high at that bclk. I wonder if there's another multiplier above 200 that would work equivilently.

You should really work on getting the fastest core clock, then uncore, then memory, if real world performance is your primary concern. 166MHz doesn't give you much in the way of CPU performance. 200x21 core, x20 uncore, 18x QPI, and 10x memory is probably the only really worthwhile DDR3-2000 settings on an air/water cooled i7 920, if you can even get that stable.

1.435v QPI/VTT voltage is high, but if you have good cooling (decent water), you could probably push 1.45 or even 1.5v if you really needed to. Bloomfield seems to be fairly durable in this respect.

Gigabyte X58 boards actually seem pretty tolerant of low QPI speed relative to uncore, so there shouldn't really be a need to push QPI further, since it has no impact on performance.

SB actually has some of the best lightly threaded memory performance you are going to see currently, despite being only dual channel. It has a few enhancements to the memory controller and it's IMC always runs at full CPU speed (no separate uncore clock). SB-E is fastest all round because of the same reasons plus quad channel.

Gulftown (the 32nm LGA-1366 hexcores) can clock memory higher than Bloomfield, but generally has slightly worse memory performance. The reason for this is that they only need to run uncore at 1.5x DDR rating, but they also have the downside of not being able to achieve the same sort of high uncore clocks (on average) either.

Thanks. I appreciate what you're saying about prioritising cpu first. I just wanted to get my moneys worth out of these sticks; I don't want them to be a trio of 1600mhz DIMMS like my last three were, if they're supposed to run faster than that. I think I notice some real-world performance boost when recording video game footage...

I thought I'd managed to get stability by fiddling with pci-e drive and skew, but it can still crash unpredictably.

I have a few more gaps in my knowledge i'm hoping you or someone else can fill:

What's the highest safe pci-e voltage? It seems I need to bump it a fair bit for stability, as you pointed out... I haven't touched the bus clock though, how does that help? Can you point me to any threads where someone with similar hardware did a successful 2000mhz ddr3? I can get it to at least boot at 4ghz qpi with the low multiplier, as well as add +1 to uncore multiplier (the latter also gives a small increase in memory bandwidth performance). This is where the unlocked multipliers on another cpu would come in handy. As you saeid I can't get good clock speeds, though I usually run my machine at a low cpu speed anyway to save on power consumption.

A bit worried about what you said about the qpi voltages and running on water. I'm on air. Is it the cpu temperature i'm concerned with here, or something else on the board? I'm wondering if there are even thermal sensors where it counts, and then if I can even see them within Windows. There's a heatsink covering part of the mainboard below the cpu, with no fan mounting, and it gets quite hot. At 1.435 volts qpi/vtt I get an average 50 degrees core temp.

A bit OT, but are the 1366 socket cpu's a redundant dinosaur now or will they get future supporting? It sure didn't last very long if they're burying it. I was originally thinking of building this PC to sell it at a gain (from scrounging I built it for less than £600), and back when I built it, it was more-or-less cutting edge cpu-wise, but then I slept too long on this plan, and the machine's tech has now been eclipsed when I wasn't looking. Not sure how much I'd get for it now. I'm wondering whether it's best to add and replace to this rig, or follow through on selling it and build a new one...

UPDATE: Just got a very first-hand experience of a memory error that didn't crash the computer... I was playing a video game and instead of displaying an icon graphic in a menu, it had a generic "IMG" stand-in replacement. Not sure if this indicative of any particular type of clocking/voltage issue. Does make me concerned for running the computer on these settings though since it could corrupt data.
