One or two bay res?

Thread Starter
I have a swiftech MCP35-x pump and am looking at either the Koolance one bay RP-401x2 or the two bay RP-402X2. I have room for either. My setup is a three fan size radiator, CPU block, and a MB cooler. I can provide specifics. Goes from the pump to the rad to the cpu cooler to the mb cooler back to the res.

Would the single or double height bay be better? Is there any reason to get a two slot bay res over a single? Any input welcome other than use the cylindrical one Swiftech has. To many issues with the acrylic.

Thanks.

Personal preference. I like the bay reservoirs that allow for a pump to be mounted inside to save space, and those are generally 2 bay reservoirs, but just as a res, whatever fits/looks best in your config.

I'd love the Koolance one-bay res/pump if it only had one res & pump or a simplified way of using both reservoirs. As it stands, it's the only option that lets me put a 35X and res in a one-bay space.

Dual slot bays have more room to let water return to normal temperature, thus increasing coolness.

I have the RP-401x2 and it has run just fine for me pushing coolant through a CPU-370, 2 GTX 590 Hydro Coppers and 2 3x120 rads. It is currently not in my system as I am running a RP-452X2 (rev 1.3) with a pair of PMP-450 pumps (D5 vario) for a change. I found that I got slightly better flow rates with the RP-401x2 with a pair of PMP-400 pumps. In both cases I am running the pumps in serial without the lower res insert.

The biggest difference I find is that with the smaller reservoir chambers in the RP-401x2 that it could froth up the coolant in the second res if the pump on the first res was set to run at 100% (12.75v by my controller). I do not find that problem with the second res in the double bay unit (but they are different pumps). I did try the RP-401x2 with the lower res insert to bypass the second res for a short period and that prevented the frothing but, while the insert is supposed to increase performance, in my case I saw a very small decrease in flow rates.

The only other thing I would note is that with the double bay Koolance res for the PMP-400 (ddc) pumps the pumps are in a recommended position. With the RP-401x2 the pumps are "upside down" in a not recommended orientation. But I ran that for a few months with no problems at all. Koolance has been making other bay res/pump units that have the ddc pump in this orientation and apparently have not had any major issues with that.

Cheers,
Sauron

Tuthsok, can you fill and run just one chamber in the 401?

Yes, with two pumps in serial by using the acrylic insert in this optional "serial kit"

http://www.koolance.com/water-cooling/product_info.php?product_id=1112

Or by only using one side of the unit as it can be used for two completely independent loops.

Let me know if you have any other questions on this unit and I will try to help.

Nope, that's all I needed, thanks. Just needed to be sure I can use one pump and one res since I don't need both.

I have been thinking of using a single 35x pump in the P1 side. Then having bothmres filled with the bottom chamber/ports open. Then use the P1 output and the P2 input. The theory is that the water would come back into P2 and that would force the water to the P1 side but only concern is the pressure buildup if it could keep up with the flow thru the bottom opening.

Wish I knew if there were water chambers passing between in the wall/separator in the middle. Maybe it will be clearer when I get it to my door, maybe not. Thinking if there are any dremel opportunities to open up a big opening between the two and, turn it into a single chamber reservoir.

What does that mean?

I would not expect the temperature to change within the reservoir. If it did, it would be a radiator.
