Radeon HD 7970 is around 30 percent faster
Quote:
According to our sources, the Radeon HD 7970 is about 30 percent faster in 3DMark when compared to the Radeon HD 6970. These are early performance benchmarks made with the first "usable" driver.

Looking at specs alone, yes the 7970 is only 30% faster.

However, there are so many optimizations and tweaking done to the architecture, that the two cards (7970 vs 6970) cannot really compare when looking at their specs and frequencies alone.

I haven't even touched AMD gpus ever, thinking for going HD 7000 series for the 1st time but it looks like I should stay with Nvidia.

I thought 30% faster than last years flagship is actually a good thing. Am I missing something here?

I dunno... Even if it's only 30 percent, I still think that's pretty good? There have barely been any GPU taxing games lately, and the other sources estimating a double improvement would seriously make upgrading a system obsolete for quite some time since there is no real software to take advantage of it. Honestly, I've been wondering when there will be real games to tax a lot of our enthusiast systems.

look at improvement from HD 4000 series to HD 5000, HD 4890 to HD 5870 (highest single gpus from each series), HD 7970 should be faster more than 40% cause it's not a revised polished version, it's completely new architecture, though speaking of new architecture nvidia fermi was a failure when it was introduced with GTX 400 series.
