Phenom II X4 960t at 4.0ghz.

Thread Starter
So i got one of the 960t's the other day and have been working on my overclock. I'm still pretty new to overclocking and so far haven't even tried the northbridge or ram. But i seem to be getting a good at the cpu portion.

Got my 960t stable at 3.991ghz and i think i can get it even further. My core temps are idle at 16c and peak at 29c under load with prime95.

Anybody else have any input on the 960t? Is 4.5ghz out of the question with this cpu?

it depends if your chip can clock that high. i wouldnt try it on an air cooler though. 4.2ghz is max i would go on air. i dont expect youll get any higer than what you are. the 700 series chipset were not overclocking friendly, imo. you could try raising the voltage a tad and see if you can squeeze an extra 100mhz - 200mhz out

I only got to about 4.2 on air with the 960T, but then dropped it back down to 4ghz just to keep for 24/7. With a good 4ghz OC and a good NB OC this processor runs really nice, and cool.
you need to get the NB at around 2600 for a stable 4ghz overclock. anything over requires a 2800mhz NB.

Im just surprised you managed a 3.991ghz OC with only 1.424v. i cant hit 3.8 unless im on 1.42v and anything higher i need to jump all the way up to 1.475v for 4ghz, and 1.525v for 4.2ghz

might want to make or buy some heatsinks for your vrms with that overclock your gonna be heating them up pretty good...at least make sure you have some air blowing on them
yes 4.5 is out of the question on air
also are those core temps?....if so you need to add 10c to make them accurate...thuban temp sensor is flawed...thats why your below ambient at idle wink.gif
still good temps though smile.gif crank up cpu/nb and maybe overclock that ram abit to get the most out of your overclock

Yeah, those VRMS need heatsinks. I used an old NB heatsink from an old OEM p4 motherboard, and the pin density on that was crazy, so i cut it up and mounted it using some thermal tape. Its better to DIY, because then you can say, yup, those heatsinks are my own work. 39 deg under load is still brilliant. my proc idles at that temp tongue.gif

You can overclock this CPU up to 4.5GHz. But your motherboard is weak for that much amount of overclock. Don't go over that Overclock and voltage.

I did have my NB up a bit when i had the X3 715 in, but AsRock in their infinite wisdom decided to put a full height NB heatsink right behind the PCIEx1 slot, making it rather difficult to use a longer PCIEx1 card in it. Using some wire cutters I was able to lower a single row of the fins to use my tuner card, but I think i unseated the heatsink from the chip as the computer started locking up after.

I think I am just going to remove it and replace it with something larger and then work on the NB again.
