Iirc, Khalam was also running off a single 1200w with 2x 6990s.

i'm going 1500w becouse i want some extra headroom for overclocking both this insanly power hungry cpu and the 6990's.

yes throttling is what i am thinking. but why then i wonder, is 3dmark11 the only software making the gpu's throttle?
ihashgpu loads all 4 gpu's 100% easily, and with no throtteling. same goes for other gpgpu software i've tested smile.gif

Then there was a sneaky patch for 3D Mark 11 (december 14th), strangely, only 2 weeks before the launch of the AMD 79xx serie , and now, with my 3930k at 5.1, I get a LOWER score with the same 4X6970 at the same clocks.
We all know that Nvidia is ''sponsering'' the 3D Mark 11 developpers... So, with the sneaky ''patching'' of 3D mark 11, and the last week paper launch of Keppler, Nvidia are trying to burst the AMD bubble... again... with sneaky tactics.
So I now get LOWER results with a 3930k at 5.1 then with the same 3930k at 4.2 2 weeks ago before the 3D Mark 11 patch on december 14th! rolleyes.gif
Good job Nvidia. They know those benchmarks are selling cards.... Nvidia $$$ hard at work...
I did reformat my system to be sure, and tried every BIOS settings in the Rampage IV, and there is nothing working. With my 3930k at 5.1, I always get a lower score then before the december 14th 3D Mark 11 patch with my 3930k at 4.2.
Sigh.

Same here, after the patch my 3960x @ 5.0Ghz AND crossfired 6990's returned a lower score than my 3930k @ 4.7ghz and tri-fire (6990+6970) after the patch. I was racking my brain trying to figure out what happened.

Not all applications will draw the same power clock per clock.

Going 1,500w is not going to solve the peak power draw. Get additional unit and share the load equally. Not a nice look with 2 PSUs if you don't have Mountain Mod or a Case Lab.

Have a look here, will give some idea as to why;

i see. thanks smile.gif

how do you go about turning on both psu's at the same time from the powerconnector on the case?

my haf x wont fit 2 psu's internally, so i guess a new case will be needed too *shrug* costly affair this is turning out to become smile.gif

if i'm going to change the case i will probably go for a LD PC-V8, as it can fit 2 psu's and also fits 3 4x120mm rad's internally. beast of a case redface.gif

so by splitting the load on 2 psu's you think i should sort my problem?
i've got a corsair tx750 i could use as a second psu to test this. the 750 should be enough for motherboard and peripherals, and the 1050w'er exclusvly on the gpu's.

But that leads me back to the first question, how would i turn them on at the same time? ;-D

That's the easy part, use this.

Problem is I don't know small PSU units below 1K which have DC to DC minor rail conversion modules that regulate crossloading. This is the issue when coupling 2 PSU in tandem. But all high end units have this. So it will be save to get another Corsair 850w. Unless, you want to a little research on the smaller unit that provides this function.

Edit: didn't see you have a TX750. Yes, that unit will do. Just get this adapter cable.

After having your PSUs up and running, refer to this thread. It will take a bit of reading. On stock BIOS and clocks will get you no where.

Have you tried overclocking your 6990's. Last time I checked on 3dmark it compared according to hardware and even 10% overclock rises score huge amounts.

I've only activated the high performance bios switch, so running at 880mhz.
Wont be able to afford the costum water loop's i want untill january/february, so on stock cooling for now.
And if Ken is right about the power issue causing throtteling, there's not much point in overclocking till i get that adapter so i can balance load over 2 psu's.

I'll do some tests with mild overclocks when i get it. The heavy duty overclocking will have to wait for water frown.gif

planning a 2 loop setup using 3x 4x120-60mm rad's. one for a cpu+motherboard loop, and 2 for the gpu's, should be overkill smile.gif
it also involves a new expensive case, so will have to divide it all up in smaller purchases.

This guy is wasting money buying a new PSU. I've been running 3 6970s on a TX850 and I get 14k 3dmark11 @ 950/1375

If you want to check for throttling, open up MSI afterburner and enable the OSD feature, and monitor the GPU usage on each GPU while 3dmark11 is running.
