Soundcard Issue

Thread Starter
Hello All,

Currently having an issue with my sound card (Creative Xfi Xtreme).

What's going on:

For the last couple of weeks the sound volume has occasionally dropped out whilst I've been listening to music etc. Normally the volume I have is about 5-10% with 50% on my external speaker control, when the problem occurs I have to turn pc audio up to 100% and speakers to 75% to get the same volume (not great as it starts to get a bit crackly at this point). Also I noticed it was happening when I walked around my room (tower sits on the floor).

I've tried:
- disabling and reenabling the sound card in device manager
- uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling
- removing and reseating the card in two different slots, connection on the mobo appears good as my wifi card has no problems in either slot.
- The card is connected to a four year old 2.1 creative speaker system, but I've attched various ipods, phones etc to it's input and the volume is normal with those.

Current status:

Stuck permanently "low volume mode", if I move the tower or walk heavily while it is on makes that sort of sound you get when you touch a 3.5mm jack to something metal, not quite sure how to describe it. If I take the 3.5mm jack out of the speaker socket on the card and push it into one of other sockets (headphones etc) about halfway in there's a lot of interference and it starts to pick up the radio?

Thanks for your time, any ideas/ diagnoses very welcome

If the other inputs work correctly on the speakers (ipod, etc.) then consider the cable leading to your sound card suspect - inspect it for kinks, etc. To eliminate the card itself, plug another device into the card and see if it sounds correct.

Ok, so slow reply but I've tried a different cable and different devices, no chance to the audio level, also tried a new version of the same card but still having the issue. Could it be the internal cable, leading from the card may have disconnected slightly somewhere?

Try disconnecting the cable from you SB Card to the your front audio port. Then plug your headphone/speaker into the rear port on your SB card. Check then sound to determine if the issue is then coming from the front audio cable/port.

Another trick is to remove the sound card and use a eraser to "clean" all connectors. A tiny amount of gunk can make a big difference.

Yea sounds like a connector problem. Try headphones like this guy said^^^. If the problem is still there, it may be the female connector on the soundcard.

You should try optical out anyway if you have that on your receiver.

Thanks guys, took the whole lot apart and moved the connector into a different USB in on the mobo after a clean and we're back in business. I find it odd that the audio from the sound card goes up into the onboard sound near the power switch (antec 900) first before joining the mobo as part of those ports, is that normal?
