vcore on I7 960

Thread Starter
Well its been about a year since my computer ran, so I'm a bit out of practice.

I've just started to overclock my new rig and I've run into an issue, i left vdroop alone after all the stuff ive read about voltage spikes, and i have 1.38vcore in bios at 175*21. In windows at idle it's 1.307v, and when i load it up with prime95 it drops to 1.164v. I know that about 1.35-1.4vcore is the upper region, but if i want to hold voltage at load i have to have high voltage at idle. Is it ok to run excessive vcore at idle to run required vcore at load?

Sorry if this has been mentioned in a previous thread.

your vcore is very high for 3.6. does your board have LLC?

I run my 970 at 200x21 with 1.30vcore, LLC full calibration on

VDroop on is better for the chip, ringback is less of a problem.

Use the lowest BIOS Vcore you can that will still run stable under load, use Linpack max memory to stresstest it.

Under 1.4v is pretty safe, 1.35v is Intel's max spec but people go way over it with more exotic cooling. You want to keep your core temps under 90C under Linpack, in real usage your temps will always be lower.
