P4 - Rate/Feedback on my OC

Thread Starter
Hi! ^^

Now that I have replaced my stock cooling with one from Zalman, I thought I'd give OC of my CPU another try, since the last time was a complete failure...

Before I post the results, there was a thing I wondered about...

I thought that the Pentium 4 Northwood were a very good CPU when it came to it's overclocking abilities. Now I know I'am quite the newbi still, but even I am very disappointed over the results I achived. So could you guys please give some feedback and perhaps ideas as to why they are so bad...

The Results:

Temperatures
CPU Idle - 30-32C
CPU Load - 40-42C

How I proceeded
Well, I mainly followed the guide here on OC.net. The one that says my limits should either be 55C or 1.7v. So I proceeded pretty much the way that is described there. Though I had to do a few things differently, as I didn't find some of the options in the BIOS (like setting the RAMs CAS).
My "aim" was all along to hit atleast 3.0Ghz, so I really wanted the FSB to be atleast on 158 (160 was nice too ). But the damn thing just didn't want to stabilize. Mostly it crashed/locked up on the login screen. Sometimes it didn't want to boot at all. When I came to 160, I gave it as much "juice" as the guide allowed (1.7v) and loosened my RAM's timing to 3-4-4-8 using Memtest86, since my BIOS doesn't have any RAM timing options. (Thought I found Memtest86 not to be the best program for that, but it was the only one I had). So no matter what I tried, I could not get to my desktop unless I set the CPU to 155/FSB 1.587/Vcore 2.5-4-4-8/CAS. But even then the programs keept crashing, so of course the Prime95 failed. So I had to lower the FSB to 150 and increase the Vcore to 1.6. And now I was able to run a Prime95 for almost 4 hours without errors.

But I still can't understand why the stupid thing couldn't settle at 3Ghz... Being a P4 (that was clocked to over 5Ghz...) I thought I would have no problem getting it to that point. Specially when the temperature bearly hit 45...

A huge thanks in advance to all the replys and tips

Hello MaxP2P,

You have a C(0) revision Northwood CPU. This CPU is not as good a processor as the D1 revisions but still will overclock decently. What is the make/model of your dram. Everest will usually tell you.

Try these settings. Be sure to set the AGP/PCI Frequency to 66.66/33.33

EDIT: DRAM CHANGE

Main:
  • IDE Configuration (Disregard these settings if you have RAID running)
  • Onboard IDE Operate Mode: Enhanced Mode
  • Enhanced Mode Support On: S-ATA
  • Configure S-ATA as RAID: No
  • IDE Detect Time Out: 0
  • Primary HD (If you don't run a RAID)
  • Everything is at Auto except..
  • SMART Monitoring: Disabled
  • 32Bit Transfer: Disabled

Advanced:

  • JumperFree Configuration
  • AI Overclock Tuner: Manual
  • CPU External Frequency (Mhz): 160
  • DRAM Frequency: 266 (Forces pc2100 and will exclude the dram from the overclock, you will get to this after you find your successful overclock)
  • AGP/PCI Frequency: 66.6/33.3
  • CPU Vcore Voltage: 1.55 ( Try 1.55V and raise if necessary. Prime95 will show if you need to raise the Vcore.
  • DDR Reference Voltage: Auto (Leave at "Auto" for now. When you have your overclock you can then use this to help tweak your DRAM
  • AGP VDDQ Voltage: 1.50V (This is default. I suggest you leave this at default)
  • Performance Mode: Auto (After you have defined your CPU and Dram speed, you can test this by setting it to "Turbo")

CPU Configuration:
  • CPUID Maximum Value Limit: Disabled (Default)
  • Hyper Threading Technology: Disabled (For your Non-HT Prescott)

Chipset:
  • Configure DRAM Timing by SPD: Enabled
  • Memory Acceleration Mode: Enabled (MAM=PAT)
  • DRAM Idle Times: 16T
  • DRAM Refresh Rate: 15.6uSec
  • Graphics Adapter Priority: AGP/PCI
  • Graphics Adapter Size: 128 (For Your X800 256MB)
  • Spread Spectrum: Disabled (Make certain you disable this)
  • MPS Revision: 1.4

W-O-W!
You have no idea how much I appriciate this!
Will try those settings right away!

Here is a link to a report file (memory related only) from Everest.
Everest Report on Memory

[Little Off Topic]
I see you know a great deal about BIOS, could you maybe help me with a problem I have been having for years? I can't seem to get my RAM to work in Dual Channel. I put them so that each card is in the same color, cause ppl have been telling me that's how I make them run in dual channel. But I everything else tells me they run in single...
PS. You really don't have to answere this. You have helped me more than enough already But if it's just a quick setting, maybe you could ^_^
Thanks again!

I assume that you have placed the strips in Dimm 0 and Dimm 2 or Dimm 1 and Dimm 3.

If so, then keep in mind that Intel chipsets demand more than AMD. They demand that the SPD (Serial Presence Detect) returns the same timings for dual channel. This means that the DRAM must at least have the same SPD timings if not the same dram.

Note that in your everest readings that the dram is different though the timings are the same. However, note that you have the first strip being a double-sided stick and the second strip being a single-sided stick or your ram chips are different sized amounts if they are both single/double sided. This is the issue with your dram. You can not have single and double-sided sticks or chips of different capacity and gain dual channel mode.

EDIT: Note the change in the DRAM settings in the BIOS I set for you. Change the DDR 333 now to DDR 266 since you have PC2700 DDR 333 strips.

Tried the settings you listed yesterday night.
(Before I saw you latest post about setting DDR to 266 and not 333)

And we (you ) definetly did something right, cause now I almost got to the login screen, where as before, it wouldn´t even boot. I tried setting the vcore a little higher in hope of maybe getting it to work, but with no luck.

When I get home, I´ll try setting the DDR to 233 in hope of it booting then.

Btw, what software should I use to change (clock) my RAMs timings?
I used Memtest86, but I kind of feel it´s not the right software to use. Tried searching on google, but most sites say it´s all in the BIOS, but that doesn´t seem to be the case for me atleast

Thank you once again for your help!

EDIT: Tried now with the 233 setting on DDR, it still reboots at the login screen. Increasing the voltage didn't seem to help either

I think your's is somewhat not as good as meet the eyes, though. My 2.4 Pressy can easily run at 3.0Ghz at the default vcore. Currently I'm running at 2.7Ghz because I'm using stock HSF . I'm using P4P800-x, you can see my cpu-z validator here: http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc?id=122678.
@about RAM timing, you should have "Configure DRAM timing by SPD" option set to disabled in order to manually config your RAM's timing.

Hey Ropey, what do you mean with this, why it's important?
What do you think the ideal PCI Latency clk? Heard a good think about it recently.

It must be the DRAM timings. Set them for:

Configure Dram Timing By SPD: Disabled

Memclock index value: 266 mhz
Cas latency (TCL) : 3
Min ras active time (TRAS) : 8
Ras to Cas delay (TRCD) : 4
Row precharge time (TRP) : 4
Row Cycle time (TRC) : 16
Row refresh cycle time (TRFC) :22
Read-to-write time (TRWT) : 3
Write recovery time (TWR) : 3
1T/2T memory timing : 1
S/W Dram over 4gb remapping : Disabled
H/W Dram over 4gb remapping : Disabled

You should be able to clock higher.

Okey, tried now with the settings from your last post.
Though I was unable to find even half the settings you listed.

Once I changed the "Configure Dram Timing By SPD" to "Disabled", the only opptions that appeared were:

DRAM CAS# Latency
DRAM RAS# Precharge
DRAM RAS# to CAS# Delay
DRAM Precharge Delay
DRAM Burst Length

I set these as followed:
3
4
4
8
4

The stupid thing still rebootet right before the login screen...
