installing windows xp pro having problems

Thread Starter
When I built my first computer, this forum and it's users were a whole lot of help to me. I had well of 500 post in less than a month back then. Well that was about 3-4 years ago. Anyways though i'm not trying to install windows on my computer I built, I am trying to install a fresh copy of windows on another computer. The hard drive has been formated and is clean. Ok i'm trying to install windows xp pro on this computer. I have the boot order set for cd drive, removable drives and then hard drive last. When I enter my xp pro disc its goes to a black screen and say "Operating system not found" and thats all I can get it to do. If I take the cd out, same thing happens. If I change the boot order to any different order, I get the same message. Whats the problem? When I built my computer, I had a small problem but a friend let me borrow a startup floppy disc. I entered it and windows then installed. Ok I went to microsoft and put the startup files on some floppys, and still I cant get them to work either.

It sounds like your trying to use a "recovery" disc.

I did a full format already. its a fairly small hard drive (40GB). Let me explain the situation, its for my sisters computer. She doesnt need much space or speed because all she does is use it to surf the internet and maybe store a few pics and mp3s. Now everything was fine with her comp until one day when she turned it on it started to load windows at the splash screen as normal and then went to a blue screen saying that she had a bad boot volume. Well I though the easiest solution would be to hook the hard drive up to another computer and reformat the drive, I did that then put it back in the computer and proceeded to install windows on the clean hard drive.

Is the CD you are using to boot from a Windows disc? Or is it a "backup" of a retail xp pro?

Well its actually a backup now that you mention it. But thats the same way I did it last time I did a clean install of windows on a computer. And I had no problems.

And it didn't work right when booting from floppy either? Thats kind of odd.

If you can get your hands on the real disc, there's a good chance it will clear up the issue. If you set only to boot from CD, does it give you a boot error when trying to read from the disc?
