Got given a server for free!

Hey Everyone

During my last days of Year 12, I was given this server from the IT Technicians. It was just sitting in a room collecting dust, They got rid of it due to having new blade servers. I believe this was extremely good for free!

Here are the specs and some pictures...

Server - ASI Clarendon SP223
Mainboard - Intel SE7520BD2
CPUS - Dual Xeon 3.6 GHZ 64bit
SCSI - Intel SRCU42E
Fibre - 3COM 1000 BASE-SX
HDDS - 5x Hitachi Ultrastar 147GB 15k - Ultra 320
RAM - 4GB - DDR2 - 400 ECC
Optical Drives - LG Combo Drive

This beast also has two whopping Delta fans, I removed the 120mm and replaced it with a lot less noiser 120cfm fan.

Anyone have any ideas what to do with this?, I was thinking of setting it up for a storage server for game patchs, and files for lan partys, etc.

That's quite an old server...

Instead of using it - why not sell it!!

You could get a few hundred for it!!

It sure is!, The damn thing puts out over 230watts of heat..

I don't think anyone would be that interested these days, mostly everyone is switching to rack servers.
I'm thinking about keeping it because I have a lot of vintage computer gear, I may as well get some use out of it.

I wouldn't use it for storage. I would install your servers on that thing. Put the hard drives in one big raid 0 for speedy load of the game server and run it at your lan parties hosting your local servers. Not to mention, it's nothing for storage. Even in raid 0, best storage capacity is 750GB. You could put a few movies and things on there, but it would serve better hosting the games. Throw a light linux server distro, only cli for less ram usage, and start the fun.

Very Good idea!
I usually play Operation Flashpoint: Resistance, COD 1 through to Black Ops.. and a few others.
The only thing I'm bothered about is setting up cod and other games on it, Since its running an horrible ATI Rage Gpu.. Could some games reject it during setup?

Game servers only present the game to client, they process everything from a command line. You connect with your game to the server, so video cards/drivers aren't an issue. As to whether those games are available to be hosted on personal servers is the question. All source games are available, and some others are that I can think of, but you will have to research what games you can host legally, even in a lan setting.

Oh Okay, Now I understand.
I will probably install XP 64bit on it, due to 4gb of ram and also because there is a fair amount of drivers for the Intel SRCU42E.

Thankyou!

Don't bother with XP. Use either Windows Server 2003 x64 or a Linux Distro x64.

Be glad that it's 64bit. I run through half a dozen rack boxes from this era each month and maybe one is a 64bit. It's worth something, but probably more as a game server to you. That's the route I'd go with it, find a nice 16/24 port switch and host your own if can smile.gif

There are probably rails for that somewhere if you ever wanted to rack it, generic rails are all over eBay.
