  • Laptop CPU 4 Core Intel 12Gig Ram
  • PS3 Running Lunix
  • Secondary System CPU 2 Core Intel 8Gig Ram (Older computer)

The Goal is to link all the systems together to act as one computer.

Interfaces
  • The Keyboard and mouse will interface threw the primary system and then have there actions piped out to the other systems over the LAN. The application I will write to do this will work much like a multiple display environment for windows. The Keyboard will be focused on the last system the mouse interfaced with (Clicked) or use hot keys to change systems. (I Might just use Synergy http://lifehacker.com/254648/how-to-control-multiple-computers-with-a-single-keyboard-and-mouse)
  • A modified XBOX Kinetic will be added as well to add to the interface experience.
  • Wacom tablet

Audio Visual
  • The primary system will act as the gaming and media computer.
  • The secondary systems will support all SKYPE/TEAMSPEEK/VENTRILO activity.
  • Speakers + Headphones + Mic

  • Dynamic Art display

General Notes

All but the primary system I own, and I own most of the displays save the large format. I have always wanted to link my computers together in some grand fashion but never had the opportunity however now I am moving to a new place and have decided the nerd cave will happen!!

I want to build this step to both maximize my computers, and also stand as a proof of concept that buying a new computer is not necessarily the death of an old one but rather a new member to a family. We as users to often view our systems like cars rather then trains and should adapt to the idea of working across multiple systems.

If you have any experiences with large setups like this or any questions and or feedback please feel free to post. currently I am in the planing stages as I don't actually move until the end of January.

So I got a hold of my old system since it was moved to a new location and the memory was burned out. (Abit C1) code, a new stick of 1gb PNY got it to post and boot. Hardly its operational setup as the secondary file controller, but it will have to do for now while I get all my old stuff off the drives and I wipe the system and switch it over to Linux.

Good news is the holidays brought me a 1TB portable USB3 drive, effectively pushing my current storage capacity to over 4TB. The goal is to have about that with the File server setup and a good chunk of that just laid out for working space.

Todo List:

Setup the specs for the primary desktop (New system)
Max out the memory on secondary system.(Data server) Reformat secondary system and install Linux.
Add one/two drives to secondary system.

select large format display(s) +Mounts
Look over networking options. (Will the switch built into a wireless router be able to handle internet+ file transfer +Active data sharing*. or should I get a separate switch +router.)
Select Cable organizers and surge protectors. (Always had cables a mess, this system, the plan is no mess)

*Some of my bandwidth within my network will be dedicated to multiple applications running distributed computing jobs. (Read more about multiple network adapters)
