New system z68 ssd caching

Thread Starter
I have a new Z68 MB and a Crucial M4 64GB ssd on the way.

I am trying to decide if I should use the ssd as cache or as the primary drive with a secondary hdd.

All I do is use the computer for gaming (BF3 is the only game I play) and surfing the web/watching streaming football.

Just wondering if anyone has some advice.

Also this is my first ssd so I have no idea how to set it up as the cache.

I suggest you use it as a primary OS drive.

If you still use it as a caching drive read my guide in the second post here: www.overclock.net/t/1156654/seans-windows-7-install-guide-optimization-for-ssds-hdds

I have M4 64 gb/ gigabyte z68. I use mine as a cache drive, i don't want to be bothered with having to manage programs for myself on the SSD space, and the losses to speed you take over pure ssd are minimal. The comparison on tom's i think R/W went from ~80/s with HDD, to ~400 with caching to ~500 with pure ssd.

You're not going to get the ultra fast boot, but is ~<30 seconds really that bad? After sleep I can wake my computer and login to windows before my monitor comes back awake. Good enough for me.

Technically there is a way to do both, use as OS drive and use the rest as cache, but it requires a few windows installs

I'm doing this right now (104gb partition for OS, 64gb partition for SRT) but I've encountered a few issues which might be unique to me but probably would stop me from doing the OS drive + SRT cache on the same drive in the future.

- I'm seeing way less than optimal performance on the OS portion of the SSD. My performance numbers are much closer to a decent SATA2 SSD which is still quite decent it just bothers me that it's not performing up to it's potential. I'm still looking for alternate explanations but right now I'm blaming SRT's RAID.

- Intel's SRT software wont let me non-destructively remove the SRT cache partition. I should have expected this, since this setup is not supported in anyway but in a typical SRT setup you can delete the SRT partition and any remaining partitions are not harmed.
