headphones 300$ to spend, am a big gamer. - Page 4

post #31 of 44
If you end up going with the PC360 and get a Xonar DG then you don't need a mini amp unless you want a 2.0 or 2.1 setup as well. (assuming you don't go with a boxed setup)

If you end up going with a higher impedance pair of heaphones I suggest you get an amp to do double duty with headphones and a 2.1 set up. I would suggest the DTA-100a as it has a better set of outputs that are compatible with bookshelf speakers.

I personally have a set of HD595s (50 ohm) powered solely by a Xonar DG as my primary sound source. My alternate is a 2.1 set up consisting of a Lepai Tripath TA2020 mini amp for a pair of 652Bs routed through a PSW10.

so is a pair of 600 ohm (with amp) head phones going to be automatically better than a set of 50 ohm head phones? for example the BD DT 880 (600 ohm) vs the SH pc360 (50 ohm) ?

so 600 ohm will sound clearer since the impedance will have a high ratio.

edit so im going to go ahead and buy the 880 (600 Ohm) now will the Fiio F9 be fine or is there another amp i should look into.

I eventually want to get a decent 2.1 set up going so is there any decent amps for 2.1 setup and headphone?

The differences can only be compared to different ohms of the SAME headphone. You can't take a high ohm headphone and compare it to a completely different headphone with lower ohm rating. Furthermore, some headphones don't come in a higher ohm rating like the AD700s. They're 32 ohms and that's it. Typically if a headphone has a higher ohm version that version SHOULD ALWAYS sound better than any lower ohm versions of the SAME headphone available. Never compare one headphone of any ohm to another of a different ohm. You're comparing two different headphones now rather than the sensitivity of the headphone. It's unfair to compare DT880s to Sennheiser PCX450s or whatever you mentioned. Any ohm version of the DT880s will sound better than the PCX450s because it's a better headphone, not because it's higher ohm.

The higher the ohm, the more voltage it needs to get the diaphragm moving accordingly, but as a result of needing more power, it also has more potential to sound better.

could this power both a 2.1 setup and drive 600 ohm head phones?obviously not at the same time one would be disabled.

Headphones would become priority when plugged in and the 2.1 will be cut out.

@waedoe

I have the hd600s + E9 amp. Coming in the mail tomorrow. HD650 is for more classical, jazz, blues. HD600 does better for rock and metal, i am also a heavy gamer and just upgraded from 555s.

Hope this helps
