Monitor not displaying - Stuck in Power Save Mode

Thread Starter
I have a 2ndary monitor, a Dell 1905FP which worked all the time until I got my new graphics card. The 5850 does not have a VGA connector, so I had to buy a VGA to DVI adapter.

I just got it and when I attached it and plugged the monitor into the 2nd DVI port in my graphics card it recognizes a Dell 1905FP is connected, but the monitor won't display anything. I clicked the menu button and it say sit's in power save mode press any button on keyboard or mouse to wake it up and clearly I did that and it didn't wake up.

Monitor is black with an amber power logo on.

I don't know what's wrong with it. Power save features are turned off. Monitor was working before. Updated graphics card drivers, idk.

When I reboot, It doesn't even show the windows logo as it boots up. Just black.

I've tried hard resetting it and pulling the power plug, but nothing.

New drivers you said? Did you doublecheck your multi monitor settings afterwards and see if they are both set up correctly?

It's set up correctly from what I can tell.

Dell 1905FP is recognized as being connected. Both DVI ports work and have been tested. The monitor is just not displaying.

Reference 5850 has 2 DVIs, DVI-I Dual Link and DVI Single Link.

If you are using DVI-VGA Adapter, you can only use DVI-I Dual Link port. The other DVI is Single Link so you have to use native DVI without adapter.

Edit:

If the other monitor is plugged to HDMI of the card, the second monitor with VGA adapter can only use the Upper DVI-I Dual Link. The lower DVI port are shared with HDMI.

Dell 1905FP has a DVI input. Is there any reason why you do not use it but use the VGA input?

If this secondary monitor is connected to the secondary output of your card, it might not show anything (eg Windows logo) until the desktop screen because, for some cards, the secondary output is enabled a little latter than the primary one.

But I suppose this is not your situation? Your main monitor shows everything during the boot process well into the desktop while the secondary monitor remains blank all the time. Correct?

Suggestions:-

1.  Perform Dell's Self-Test Feature Check. Follow the procedure here:

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/monitors/r83546/EN/solve.htm#Troubleshooting%20Your%20Monitor

If it is out of sync, go to CCC to make sure it is sending 1280 X 1024 @ 60Hz signal to the monitor.

2. Instead of resetting the monitor by unplugging the power cable, get into Factory Reset in the Main Menu and select the 'All settings' (the bottom big red dot) to change all settings back to factory.

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/monitors/r83546/EN/setup.htm#Connecting%20Your%20Monitor

Like I said, I swapped the two's positions and it didn't help.

I even went and made sure the native DVI (samsung) was plugged into the SL DVI. The VGA-DVI Adapter is plugged into the DL DVI.

It's still not showing anything. I have no idea where another DVI cable is for the Dell. I'm not even sure if I should buy one honestly because why isn't VGA-DVI adapter working?

I click the menu button on my Dell Monitor and it tells me:
"1: Analog Input
In Power Save Mode
Press Any Key on Keyboard or Move Mouse"

And I clearly have tried what it told me.

I went and received a 2nd VGA-DVI Adapter and this one isn't even recognized by my computer. The other recognized it, shows that the computer extended monitors, but doesn't display anything and has an amber power signal.

With the first adapter it gave me that windows sound "da dink" when you plug something in. It then went black screen, amber power signal, and showed it supposedly working on my desktop (but not showing anything on monitor).

The 2nd adapter gave no sound, not recognized and shows a floating "Analog input Self Test Feature Check" with RGBW below it.

So each monitor works by its own and only don't work with both plugged in?

Did you uninstall Catalyst "select express uninstall" restart PC then install the Catalyst for the new card?

If no, download and do it. This is the link to latest Official Catalyst.

To be honest, I don't think the 2ndary monitor(dell) works on it's own. The Samsung works in either of the DVI ports. Idk what else to do.

I note, from your sig, that your primary monitor is a Samsung 2333T or 2333SW.  Either monitor should have a D-sub (VGA) input.  Can you try to use the two DVI-to-VGA adapters to connect from your card's DVI output to the D-sub(VGA) input of the Samsung?  This is to confirm that the adapters are OK.

As you mentioned above, 1st adapter gave the Windows ''da dink'' and the Dell is recognized but the 2nd adapter gave no sound and recognition.  Since everything is constant except the adapter, it could mean the adapters are faulty.

So, eliminate this remote possibility by doing the above test.

PS I see the Dell has a DVI input.  Any reason why you do not use it?
