Help with current Rig

Thread Starter
So i know my mobo sucks and i'll upgrade it later but my question is will the AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition run on my current mobo?

For example, will my mobo even be able to run it safely, what kind of power supply will I need, if I even need to get a new one?
Link for CPU : http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=4_64&item_id=027384

Any other suggestions would be nice, i got maybe $220 to spend for now, trying to keep in mind I got to replace almost everything in my Rig.

Thanks for your time.

You really do need to replace everything in that case. You're going to need a better mobo and a better power supply. I would recommend at least 500W. Get a new motherboard with an AM3+ socket. Getting a new motherboard also means replacing that outdated DDR2 memory with some DDR3 memory.

I would suggest that you get these parts in order to stay close to your budget. Though I don't think you're going to be able to get by on $220.

RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231311

Total is about $280.

Nice, thanks for those! biggrin.gif

So I can probably get the CPU really quick, does anyone think my motherboard will be able to run it until I get a new mobo or do i run a risk of damaging the new CPU or other components?

Well that board has an AM2+ socket which means that the CPU will run but not very well. You certainly wont be overclocking with it. So in essence, yes, your current motherboard should work (not saying that it will for sure) but I would strongly recommend that you do a full system overhaul in the near future.

^ OEM motherboards usually aren't rated to run processors above 95W TDP.  You will want to check. To a

To add on to the previous deals posted:

There's only a very negligible difference between a 970 and a 955, and a 960T is a better choice for some less.  You may also be interested in the FX-4100 which is at an excellent $100 (after gift card) right now - it provides better single threaded performance (although not better multi threaded, though you can still expect some improvement from your current Athlon II x3) when overclocked compared to an overclocked Phenom II x4 at lower power consumption.

The (very overpriced) generic DDR3-1333 RAM suggested will not give you many options esp. if you want to mix bus clock & multiplier overclocking.  There are, however, several performance-binned DDR3-1600 kits available for less, such as this one.  By all means you can get significantly better memory for less, don't get that kit.

I completely forgot about TDP! doh.gif You are very right about that. In that case he should get a 960T as it's TDP is 95W.
