Hello,

I have been lurking around this forum for a while now. And this is my first post here (I can't believe this). Anyways, I'm building this rig. All the components are as given below:

Computer Parts :

Proc - Intel core i7 980X
Mobo - Asus Rampage III Extreme
Ram - G.Skill Ripjaws 4GB x 3
Graphics - 3x EVGA GTX 580 3GB hydro copper 2
PSU - Antec HCP1200 and Corsair CX430
Case - Mountain Mods Extended Ascension

578

Water cooling Parts :

CPU Block - EK Supreme HF (Copper Plexi)
TIM - Indigo Xtreme
Rads - 3x RX360 + 1x RX480
Res - Phobya Balancer 250 Black Nickel version
Pumps - 2x Alphacool VPP655 Single Edition
Top - EK D5 dual top Black Acetal
SLI Fittings - Bitspower D-plugs
Tubing - PrimoChill PrimoFlex PRO LRT 1/2'' ID 3/4'' OD UV Blue
Fittings - Bitspower rotary compressions, 45*, 90* compressions
Fan Controller - Sunbeam 30W Rheosmart 6 channel fan controller
Bitspower 120mm Water Tank Mount Panel (BP-120WTMP-BK) - To mount res on 120mm fans/radiator
Misc - Some 3 pin Extensions, Molex Extensions, 3-pin y cables, Liquid Flow Indicator, Koolance inline drain, Silver Killcoil etc

Fans - 22x Gentle Typhoons AP15

I know. Hydro copper 2s. But can't do anything about it. It's sort of a gift.

I've been running most of the computer parts with gigabyte GTX 480 SOC version in HAF-X.

What I'm planning currently is something like this.
2x RX360 + 1x RX480 on the front panel
1x RX360 On the back panel
HCP1200 in the bottom PSU slot
CX430 in the top PSU slot
Res mounted on the RX480 rad/fan assembly as high as possible
Pumps sitting on the floor below the res
Back panel RX360 and RX480 in push-pull, other 2 RX360s in push or pull (need ideas)
Loop order - Res > pumps > CPU block > back RX360 > GPU blocks in parallel > RX480 > RX360 > RX360 > Res
I'm planning on mounting back RX360 such that ports will be at the top.
I don't know whether to mount front panel rads with ports at the top or at the bottom.
Also, don't know the air intake-outlet scheme. I will really need some help deciding this.

Okay, that's all I've thought till now. Sorry for bad english.

All suggestions are more than welcome.

Thanks,
finrod.

Unless you already have the parts, why not go for the 3960x? It's only about $100-150 difference.

Oh. I'm currently running 980X and R3E for some 8-9 months now, on air. So, not planning to swap out the proc or mobo.

If one thing I learned is that planning a double wide case, the end result is not going to be what you planned.. The simplest way is to look at it and put everything inside and then start from there, once you have that out the way, you will end up putting stuff in a different order for the sake of shorter tubing length.

If you can afford to or unless you are planning dual loop, you can do 3x 360 in front and that will make your tube routing much cleaner and easily manageable, if you are into aesthetics at all...

3x 360 front, push pull with a shroud is even possible, top bay cleared for your accessories, bay res makes it simpler but tube res might be your thing, just means more tubing...

Other then that, it looks good.. Dont forget to post some pics of the end results, I love looking at double wide cases.. thumb.gif

rads on top would get in the way of the PSU as well as the front bays. I was looking at the same case with the same top and came to realize that the front is the best place to put rads. Push/pull config shourded and all can fit there. Putting a bay in the back looks like to could work but i'd rather put all the rads together saves tubing and making routing alot easier.
If you can do push/pull before anything else. Loop order doesn't matter. Ports at bottom or top only matters what would give better routing and untill you set it all up you can't decide that and even then if your like me you will change it at least a few times before you even start.
Intake outake setup...... i'd put most fans intake then exhaust out the top

@frank anderson and Shawnb99

Thanks for the valuable inputs. I'm not planning a dual loop. It will just be single giant loop.

The other thing is, I'm not installing my RX480 on top. It will be on the front panel. The "standard" panel shown in the picture is the back panel that I've ordered. If I can mount front panel rads inverted then I think the tubing would look good. I care about the aesthetics as much as the next guy, but I prefer performance over aesthetics any day.

That triple quad top panel is there just for show. I'm not putting anything in there. So my 5.25'' drive bays will be free. Also PSU won't block anything.

Btw frank, I love the way you treated your Hamster. Those 4x D5 must push a lot of water through the loop. I'm just hoping that my 2x VPP655 s will be enough for my current loop.

Update :

Package from Mountain Mods just arrived. Now I can see whether everything fits inside the case the way I wanted. Otherwise, back to the drawing. Will post some pics as soon as it's ready. Haven't decided the name yet. frown.gif

Update :

I did the CPU only loop last night in the old system (HAF-X). Applied Indigo Xtreme. Did the bleeding/leak testing for 12 hours. This loop contains only CPU block and 1 RX360 rad with 3x Gentle Typhoons in Push.

Indigo Xtreme reflow is seriously one scary thing to do. All core hit 100C and capped there in an instant after running prime95. Now the temps are as follows:
idle : core1 - 16 C, core4 - 25 C, all others are in the range 17 - 20 C.
load (small fft in prime95) : core1 - 36 C, core4 - 42 C, all others are 37 - 38 C. Earlier under air, load temps were in the range of 85-86 C.
I'm running 980x at stock clocks btw. Oh, and ambient is around 73 F.

Are these temps okay? This difference between core1 and core4 temps means that reflow was not even across the whole chip, right? Should I try to reflow again or is it okay to have one outlier like this?

I appreciate all the help. Thank you!

Thats pefectly normal for the cores to differ. I have the same processor and my cores all vary the same. Im interested in your build, i just bought the same case last night with the front panel that will take my gtx 480/2 gtx 360's and the horizon mb tray. Indigo is a very nice TIM, i used it but now i switched to ARtic ceramic just because if you dont get good reflow, you have to redo it all and it can be a pain to get off you cpu/ block. Ive had to take a razor blade to my block to get everything off. Good luck with the build.

That's good then. Reflow is done. One less thing to worry about.

Now that all my gtx 580s are here, I'm putting everything together in my new case. These compression fittings can be real PITA. Thumbs and first fingers on both hands hurt like hell.

Thanks Nyghtryder for the explanation. This is a very nice case. Spacious. Though sometimes I worry about the weight my motherboard is going to carry (cpu block plus 3 gtx580s with full cover waterblocks). Now I think that I should have ordered horizon motherboard tray like you did. Wise decision there. I would like to see the pics when you are done.

One question :
I'm connecting 3 gpus in parallel. So, is it a good idea to connect drain line at the bottom of the third card? See picture below for explanation.

Please forgive my pathetic paint skill.
