Control for windows media TV

Thread Starter
I have a desktop PC connecting to my HDTV via HDMI. How can I control windows media center without needing to walk over to the PC?

I heard there is a remote control for windows media centre, but you would also need a TV tuner card with an IR sensor too correct?

You can use independent remote (those are not tied to the TV tuner), and I recommend those over remote that came with TV tuner.

For me I just use a wireless keyboard instead.

A WMC remote will work, and you don't need a TV tuner. Something like THIS would work just fine (it is $13 shipped with code EMCJHHK72 for another week) and it includes the IR receiver.

edit: oops, I just saw your in Canada, so the code may or may not work, look on Newegg's newest e-mail and it may be on there for Canada.
Here is the Newegg.ca link. No code or free shipping, so a bit costly.

2nd edit: Here is one for $15 shipped on Newegg.ca.

These remotes allow you to scroll through the WMC menu's easily, but they do nothing if your not in WMC (they do not act as a mouse and such).

If you have a smartphone, you can download free apps that make it a wifi remote. I use "Unified Remote" when I need a keyboard. I just use a wireless mouse for everything else.

Agreed!

If you want to use it outside of WMC then you might be better of with a little more versatile I/O device such as this one - Rii Mini - you should be able to find it is CA as well!

Suggesting this one because it is backlit as well, if you use this HTPC in a dark/dimly lit room, that makes a huge difference!

Or else this one is good as well - Logitech K-400

That's a great idea I used an app called Gmote (for android) all the time, you phone has to have WiFi and both the HTPC and the mobile device needs to be on the same network all the time!

It sometimes can be a pain sometimes (that's why I got a Rii Mini for my HTPC finally), but if you are trying to save some money then you can make this work.

Gmote 2.0 from the android market is free and you can't argue with free, so I would start with that assuming you have android phone or there should be something similar for i-phone as well!

I have both MediaMote and Logitec Touchmouse on my iPhone, but still use the remote, it is just easier.
I also have a Lenovo Keyborad/trackball combo that I use if I need to type on it.
