That's true, but in a liquid, the motion is much slower. Heatpipes are at a sub atmostpheric pressure, so the water "boils" at a lower temperature. Also, due to the capilaries, the liquid can only flow in one direction. Essentially there isn't enough room within (or on the surface of) the capilary to set up converse flows.

also its a liquid metal, does it really evaporate that easily? maybe i just have a diffrent vision of evaporation in mind.

my understanding of heatpipes is that they work by evaporating and then condensing the liquid inside. That allows the vapor to travel to the opposite end of the tube, where it's cooled ( through gradient transfer- dissipating the heat) , and then recondenses and travels back to the other side. Am I wrong in my understanding?

I don't think they use liquid metal. They contain water or some other chemical that when stimulated by low pressure and heat will evaporate at a predetermined temperature.

You would be correct. The "wick" inside helps move the condensed liquid back to the hot side.

There are a multitude of variables in heat pipes and there efficency.
1. Vertically vs Horizontally
2. The material used in them, there are several
3. Whether the pipes have internal baffeling to better transfer the work
Those are all I could think of ATM.

Okay there seem to be a lot of misconceptions in this thread, so to put the myths to rest.

Heat pipes do not greatly rely on gravity (most cases not at all). They will work regardless of the mount angle. This is why there are so many effective configurations of coolers, each utilizing heatpipes differently, but efficiently.

There is no liquid metal in the things...

As with any cooling system, if it's utilized correctly and is not incumbered by poor ventilation, heatpipes in any configuration can be used effectively.
