Modem to wireless router to Ethernet.

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

I am trying to think of something and I have no idea how to put it. Basically I want a router that wirelessly connects to my modem. I want my computer and Xbox to connect to that wireless router that is connected to my modem. Can someone please explain it to me. I have no idea if I am making any sense.

Thanks

Jim

Hi Jim,

I think what you want, is a wireless router connected (by wire) to your modem.
This will allow you to connect all your devices, wireless or not, to the internet through your modem.

Hi NorthWood,

I know what you are trying to say. My router already has wireless inbuilt but the problem is its to far away for my computer/Xbox. I really don't want to buy a wireless adapter for both so I am trying to say that I want a router that is connected wirelessly to the modem so I can plug in Ethernet cables.

Okay, I get what you want now.

But this won't be very cost-effective.
What I would do, is to run a cable from the modem to a switch near your pc/xbox - cheapest and easiest way smile.gif

Or you you can get one of those linksys routers and put "DD-WRT" (Google is your friend btw) on it and have fun. thumb.gif

link: http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/index

So it would go like this

Modems wireless(~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~)Linksys router (with dd-wrt setup up in "AP"mode) then just plug in the Ethernet cables

Will this allow for router-to-router connection, or are you thinking of the signal boost option?

That's cool, I didn't know.

@OP - You should be able to find a linksys wrt54g for almost nothing these days, then throw on the open source firmware.

I would still use a cable though.
