Virtual Memory Needed!?

Thread Starter
Okay so I install this Newbury House Dictionary off a CD and when I run it, it tells me "Director Player 6.0 This Program Requires At Least 3MB of Virtual Memory to Run". I have 2560mb of DDR400 in dual channel, don't tell me this is not enough! I'm so angry. I am hesitant in turning on my page file again.

why are you hesitant to turn on your PF?

Because when it uses the harddrive as virtual memory, the speeds of it are much slower than my physical system ram, thus sacrificing performance during games.

Well you need it for this program

Just set a pagefile of 30mb

that correct, but you really only use paging when a program goes idle or you fill up your current commit charge to physical.
EDIT: and with that much ram, i really dont think you would page more than like 100megs, ever.

Alright thanks Blue Fire, I'm thinking about putting my pagefile to 3mb exactly lmao.

So you're saying that no matter what I set my pagefile as, my games won't even reach my pagefile because it won't even need to use all the physical ram, correct?

ROFL you have so much ram, you could run quake 4 at ultra, then start up some doom 3 and still have room for lunch.
in short yes. Microsoft recommend like 10% of total to pageing for an "in-case" situation. Most of the time page files are used for virtual ram to save on system ram.
